The most important advice that we can give is to avoid careless behavior. Leaving expensive garden equipment – such as a grill station, lawn mower, or unlocked bicycles – out in plain sight sends a clear message to criminals that you’re not all that protective of your belongings, and as such they’ll be more inclined to target your property over someone else’s. The same could be said about valuable interior objects such as paintings, ornaments, jewelry or electronics; it’s best to place valuable objects out of the way so they aren’t visible from the street.

On the other hand, flaunting your alarms and camera systems is highly encouraged. A quick glance at your arsenal of security devices may convince would-be interlopers to reconsider their plan. It’s important to mention, though, that it’s only worthwhile putting devices on display if they are high-tier ones. Dud cameras or bargain bin products create the opposite of their intended effect, since practiced criminals can easily see through a weak attempt at intimidation, prompting them to double their efforts.

Improved door security

It goes without saying that the doors must be always locked, but some homeowners go one step further and arm their security system while sleeping or gardening. The main entrance is often the focus point of a break-in, so make sure to have a door constructed from aluminum alloy or some sort of hardwood, with durable steel hinges that can withstand the pummeling it might take. Glass doors and sliding door panels in the backyard cannot be reinforced as it would defeat their whole purpose, so in these cases it’s a smart idea to place a glass break sensor or motion detector near them.

There are a multitude of locks to choose from to keep those entrances secure, too. Smart ones can be unlocked by biometric scanning or by using a smartphone app, but don’t rely on modern technology too much. The sensible choice is to install more than one lock, because it ensures a feeling of confidence, while also meaning criminals will most likely move on since having to break through multiple locks increases the chance of getting busted by a passerby.
