Arming Your Home Security While Going to Sleep at Night

A common fear among homeowners with advanced security is that they might end up tripping their own devices as they stumble through their own hallway during the night. The fear is well-justified, too, because some home security companies charge customers for unwarranted alerts. However, the other end of the spectrum is equally unfortunate; turning off the alarms while sleeping is a risky move since burglars can then sneak in anytime and leave without anyone realizing. The best course of action to solve this issue is to smarten up the alarm system or place them in such a way that only intruders will fall for the trap.

Turn on the alarms, even while staying at home

It’s a widespread misconception that alarms aren’t necessary if the building is occupied because the residents would surely notice an interloper. Contrary to this popular belief, however, robbers are eerily quiet and spend only ten minutes inside the house, max. They prioritize objects that are easy to carry and worth as much as possible in the black market, such as jewelry, medicine, cash, and small-sized electronics. They’ll grab what they can and if you happen to be sleeping on the upper floor or having a nap on the balcony, chances are high that you’ll miss the action completely.

Placing alarms tactically

It goes without saying, then, that you should turn on the alarm system when going to sleep, but what about false alerts that occur when a family member visits the bathroom and accidentally walks into an armed sensor? This is an aspect that homeowners should consider before installing the alarm system. In most cases potentially double-edged devices such as sound-activated cameras and motion sensitive devices should be placed next to the main entrances of the home and rooms that probably won’t be visited by any residents at night. If you live in a multi-story house, plant most of the alarms on the ground floor and only use cameras and motion-activated lights on the upper floors.

Set up smart rules

Thanks to advancements in smart home technology there are options to set specific rules for any alarms. By opening the company’s smartphone app, simply schedule an automatic arming sequence for the alarms so that you won’t have to worry about leaving the house defenseless when going to sleep. Certain home security companies such as GetSafe also offer dynamic alert modes, where you can customize which sensors should be active. For example, when day mode is active so are all the alarms, but when you switch to night mode the motion sensors around the bedroom are deactivated while the rest remain watchful.

Involve the monitoring agents

If you have subscribed to a monitoring service, then the base station will share the alert notifications with a dedicated staff member. By default they will contact the residents to check whether it was a false alarm or not, but they are also able to access the camera feed wherever cameras are available, too. The highly trained monitoring agents therefore provide a second safety net as they can easily verify a threat, not to mention that staff members know how to intimidate robbers by yelling at them through the base station’s speakers. Their actions often provide enough time for the residents to wake up and react to the situation with a clear head.
