Formerly known as Jive, GoTo Connect is GoTo’s answer to businesses’ virtual phone system needs. Coming from a company that offers some of the best web conferencing and webinar software on the market – GoTo Meeting and GoTo Webinar – we had big hopes for GoTo Connect. We’re happy to say that the virtual phone system exceeded our expectations. The platform is intuitive and easy to use without lacking any of the important features you need in a VoIP provider. In addition to an extensive set of tools for call handling and phone system management, you can also count on reliable online faxing, messaging, web conferencing, and more. The software is available on any device through its web version, but there are also dedicated programs for desktop and mobile. Prices depend on the number of users, but small companies with up to ten employees can use GoTo Connect for as little as $22 per month per user.

It’s not every day that we come across as extensive a virtual phone system as GoTo Connect. In addition to offering all the call handling and management tools you could ask for, the platform also comes packed with features for team communication and seamless customer support.

GoTo (formerly LogMeIn) is known mainly for its spectacular web conferencing software GoTo Meeting. So, it’s not surprising that GoTo Connect offers excellent video conferencing tools. It supports up to 250 participants and 25 live webcams simultaneously and comes with advanced features like breakout rooms. But online meetings are overkill when you only need to solve a minor problem or ask a quick question. That’s why the software also offers team messaging and audio conferencing.

If your business still uses fax as a communication channel, you’ll be happy to know that GoTo Connect provides online faxing. Although this feature won’t replace a full-blown online faxing service, it does allow you to send and receive faxes via email, eliminating the necessity of a fax machine.

Companies looking for a contact center solution can get a reliable one with GoTo Connect by getting this as a separate add-on or subscribing to the Premium plan. This provides all the necessary tools to run an effective call center, including the Supervisor Dashboard, real-time queue updates, and the ability to listen, whisper, and barge calls.

Other extras you can add to your account include Business Continuity, which ensures you can dial internal extensions and emergency contacts when there’s a service disruption, and Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) for improved network quality.

Call handling

Call handling tools are the bread-and-butter of any virtual phone system. Not even all the extra features in the world can make up for a faulty call handling system. But with its user-friendly dashboard and extensive set of call handling toolsGoTo Connect is anything but faulty.

All the usual suspects are there – forwarding, transferring, and parking calls is possible without leaving the conversation tab. More importantly, the service allows for hot-desking, an affordable way to have agents available around the clock. But if your company has a set schedule, admins can set up working hours and decide what to do with after-hours calls. One option is to send callers directly to voicemail, which you can later listen to in the app, or to configure the software to send the voicemail audio file or transcript to your email.

Business owners with a high volume of inbound calls will be happy to know that GoTo Connect comes with call queues from the get-go. Depending on your preference, you can either have them go through an auto attendant recorded greeting or listen to on-hold music. The platform comes with default audios for both, but you can also upload your own recordings and audio files.

Phone system management

The simplicity of GoTo Connect’s phone system management is one of its biggest strengths. While some competitors make this process overcomplicated, GoTo Connect’s user-friendly admin dashboard makes it easy to add new users, assign them numbers, and tweak the most important settings.

But just because most configurations only take a few minutes to set up, doesn’t mean they aren’t comprehensive. For instance, the ring groups utility has several options, allowing you to configure it to your heart’s content.

What surprised us the most was how easy it is to manage call routing – especially when creating a dial plan. Right off the bat, the software already has several premade call-routing trees, including a simple auto attendant. Of course, you can start with a blank canvas and create your own dial plan from scratch. There are over 20 options to play with, divided into three colored categories. These colors make it easy for you to get an overview of your call routing. Plus, since the feature is drag-and-drop, it’s incredibly intuitive.

All users get their own phone and fax numbers, which can be either local or toll-free. Although GoTo Connect doesn’t offer true 800 numbers, you can get a vanity number without paying extra, which is a great deal compared to other virtual phone system providers.

It’s also possible to port your existing number at zero cost. Unfortunately, GoTo Connect doesn’t disclose a timeframe for this process, as it depends on various variables that aren’t in GoTo Connect’s control. Still, you can count on an expert to help you along the way and answer all your questions. It’s important to mention that each extra phone number costs $5 per month and that GoTo Connect doesn’t provide international virtual numbers (even though it operates all over the world).

Most employees can’t be tied to their desks. They have places to go and people to meet, and will have their phones on them at all times. That’s why GoTo Connect offers all available call handling features on mobile, and the iOS and Android apps perfectly mirror the desktop program.

For the most part, it only takes one tap to reach all the tools available, including team messaging, voicemail, and online faxing. You can even start an online meeting from your smartphone within seconds. One of the things we love the most about the GoTo Connect mobile app is that it automatically divides your contacts into personal and business. This is especially useful when the app automatically accesses your phone contacts, as everything is added to the personal tab.

Integrations

While GoTo Connect is an extensive virtual phone system, it lacks some of the important features that companies require, such as CRM. That’s why the platform integrates with 17 third-party solutions, including Zendesk, Salesforce, and Zoho. Plus, businesses can streamline their communications by integrating GoTo Connect with Google, Microsoft, and Slack.

By taking advantage of Zapier, you can increase the number of integrations available to more than 4,000 apps. This lets you build a more personalized virtual phone system, allowing you, for example, to send automatic text messages or create subtasks in a project management platform after taking a call. Those who want tailored integrations with their system can use GoTo Connect’s API found in the developers’ dashboard.

GoTo Connect‘s pricing follows the industry norm. All plans are billed per user, and the unit price decreases with the number of people added to the subscription. There are three different plans – Basic, Standard, and Premium – that come with an annual or monthly billing cycle. As usual, the longer you commit, the less you pay per month.

Bear in mind that the Basic subscription is usage-based. So, you’ll have to pay for every inbound and outbound call. GoTo Connect offers unlimited calling to over 50 countries from the Standard subscription onwards. Considering that Basic starts at $22 per month per user and Standard at $26, most companies will get better value for money with the more expensive subscription. Meanwhile, the Premium plan provides more advanced features, including call center tools. GoTo Connect also has a wide VoIP phones catalog, which we highly recommend browsing if you want to have a phone on your desk.

Customer support

As part of GoTo, GoTo Connect offers the same level of customer support as its siblings GoTo Meeting and GoTo Webinar. In plain English, this means 24/7 customer support by phone and email. Unfortunately, live chat is run by a bot and doesn’t allow you to connect to a real person. What’s worse is that the bot is far from helpful, as it didn’t understand most of our questions. Still, the number of resources offered by the company is gigantic, and you’ll find both articles and video tutorials explaining everything GoTo Connect has to offer. GoTo Connect is also present on social media, mainly Facebook and Twitter. Although the company posts irregularly, GoTo Connect usually responds to customers’ tweets. But this isn’t the same story when it comes to Facebook as GoTo Connect has Messenger open to visitors, but the contact button directs people to the company’s website. Plus, most replies on this social media platform ask users to get in touch via the traditional channels.

Bottom line

Overall, GoTo Connect is a reliable virtual phone system that bundles calling, text and online messaging, faxing, and web conferencing. All this while being extremely easy to set up and use. The extensive set of features allows you to create the phone system of your dreams, and the unlimited international calling lets you grow your business overseas without the fear of a hefty phone bill. Of course, not everything is perfect. Even though GoTo Connect operates worldwide, it only lets you pick a phone number from your own country. Plus, the Basic subscription doesn’t come with any included minutes, which may lead to expensive billing. That’s the main reason why we recommend opting for the Standard plan right away.
