One of the great things about using a Mac is that they’re incredibly fast. Eventually though, Macs start to show signs of age and slow down drastically. Mac optimization software aims to extend your Mac’s lifespan by freeing up space and gaining back some lost speed. MacBooster was developed by Chinese software company IObit, which boasts over 250 million downloads of its various system utilities. Now up to its eighth iteration, MacBooster scans your system for junk files that are taking up vital space and provides virus and malware protection. You can also search your Mac for old, large, and duplicated files – enabling you to free up space and increase your system’s speed. You can get MacBooster 8 by signing up for a yearly subscription or by purchasing a lifetime license. Although there are no free trials available, every purchase comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee, so you’re able to test out all the features.
From the first launch of MacBooster 8, you’re given a system status overview. From there you’ll be able to run your initial scan, which looks for junk files, viruses, and malware, and then runs a file optimization process. MacBooster has a stylish user interface with a menu on the left showing all the different processes, including individual scans. It’s worth clicking on each utility find out more about exactly what they do.
MacBooster has a mini version that lives in your menu bar. From there you can view your memory usage and network speeds, and switch on the firewall. The mini version also has a lightning booster feature, which uses RamDisk to create a virtual drive on your desktop. This is designed to increase the speed of reading and writing files at the expense of a small amount of memory.
Once you’ve installed MacBooster and are ready to get started, you can immediately run a thorough scan. This scan is made up three different scans, each of which can be run individually if needed. These include system junk (such as old cache files) scanning, virus scanning, and malware scanning. There’s also a turbo boost which is designed to optimize your disk and fix permissions.
MacBooster assesses the system status depending on what the software finds after a thorough scan. While scans are very quick, the assessments aren’t always reliable. MacBooster will certainly show when your system is at risk, but the problem found was that it rated our system as “poor” for having just 17MB of apparent junk, which seemed like an extremely harsh rating.
Doing each scan individually gives you much more detail about what processes are taking place. You’ll see just how much space superfluous application files are taking up. It’s obvious what the virus and malware scans are doing, but the turbo boost section is worth taking a closer looking at. Turbo boost allows you to optimize your Mac’s disk by fixing caches, disk permissions, and media caches – perfect for when iTunes slows down your system.
Besides the scans MacBooster performs, there are many more utilities that will help your Mac run faster. The memory cleaner is very similar to the existing macOS activity monitor utility, but MacBooster’s version is a lot easier to deal with. The privacy protection is an excellent addition for those wanting to leave no trace on their system. From this section you’re able to close any unopened tabs, delete saved browser passwords, and clear any lists of recently opened items.
MacBooster has all the important optimization utilities you need, like searching for large and old files – a great way to clear out forgotten files taking up unnecessary space. The duplicate file finder is also very useful for increasing your free space. You can choose either to scan your entire computer for files, or choose an individual folder to be scanned. We particularly like the photo sweeper addition, which works like the duplicate file finder but instead groups together very similar images.
One utility we didn’t find as useful was the uninstaller. MacBooster’s uninstaller doesn’t add much that you can’t already do by uninstalling apps the usual way. Indeed, unlike some other Mac optimization products, MacBooster doesn’t allow you to uninstall the more difficult-to-remove apps, like the Chess game or the Mail app.
MacBooster offers three different ways to subscribe to the service. The cheapest way to get MacBooster 8 is by signing up for the Standard subscription. Standard allows users to cover one Mac computer, complete with 24/7 customer support for a yearly price of $59.95, which works out to $4.99 per month. If one Mac isn’t enough, you can upgrade to the Premium subscription which covers three devices. The Premium package comes to $129.95 – the equivalent of $10.83 a month paid annually. The Premium subscription covers three Macs and gives you access to priority customer support.
If monthly subscriptions aren’t your style, you have the option to buy a lifetime license. The Lite package covers three Macs at a one-off price of $179.95. Unfortunately, lifetime users don’t get access to 24/7 or priority support, and you may need to pay a fee to access any future significant upgrades. One aspect of purchasing subscriptions we didn’t like was the so-called “download insurance service”, which is supposed to cover you if at some point you need to reinstall your products with a fresh download. We think it sounds more like an opportunistic cash-grab.
It’s a good idea to regularly check the MacBooster website, as there are frequent online sales that give you huge reductions. One annoying thing is that the MacBooster website tries to pressure you when these sales are on to buy right away, but you have plenty of time: all MacBooster subscriptions come with a 60-day money-back guarantee.
MacBooster accepts various payment methods, such as any of the major credit or debit cards and PayPal. Alternatively, you can pay by check, wire transfer, or even in cash: MacBooster supports PayNearMe, so you it’s possible to pay with cash at a local 7-Eleven or ACE Cash Express.
MacBooster doesn’t offer much variety in contact methods for its customer service. Their 24/7 support is found on the website by filling in an online form. Of course, Premium subscribers will have access to priority support. Alternatively, you can call the MacBooster toll-free number for phone support. There’s also the IObit community, which has a dedicated forum for MacBooster, although activity is limited.
The MacBooster website hosts a short FAQ section to get more information about the product – it’s something that could easily be expanded in the future. The user guide is similarly brief but is aided by the clear screenshots, so new users should have no issues getting set up.
MacBooster is a fast and responsive app with all the tools you need to speed up a Mac that feels like it’s on its last legs. Scans are done quickly and efficiently and can free up a huge amount of disk space. The malware scans in particular are very useful, as many users may not realize how prevalent malware is on macOS systems. While MacBooster may seem expensive initially, if you manage to grab it during one of the frequent sales the price becomes more than reasonable. However, we do feel that the extra download insurance takes advantage of users. Overall though, thanks to its user-friendly interface, MacBooster is an ideal solution for anyone looking to make the most of their Mac.
