Yard signs, decals and stickers with a security company’s name written on them are popularly believed to be one of the most effective criminal deterrents. Burglars catch sight of them, note the fact that your home is well-protected by one of the best systems and then move on, right? Well, not really. Signs are proven to have barely any role in scaring away wannabe burglars.
The main reason for this is that most signs you’ll find on the internet are either generic or from a local security company. The big brands such as Frontpoint Security, ADT and Guardian Protection Services provide these items for freewith your home security system, but you cannot purchase them without opting for a security system first. Yet many homeowners gamble with their safety, relying solely on stickers to save a couple of hundred dollars. But doing so is a very risky move…
We have a laundry list of reasons why fake yard signs are a terrible replacement to mask the lack of a home security system. First of all, they broadcast desperation. Placing decals and signs around your front yard and on your windows shows the world that you don’t trust your defenses enough and are instead desperately trying to deter criminals. Not to mention that your efforts could have the reverse effect, since the sign telegraphs the message ‘I can afford a security system, therefore I have valuables inside’. Besides, criminals aren’t stupid.
Fake yard signs might scare away lowlife thugs, but a professional burglar would recognize a non-official one and call your bluff. And don’t even think about buying a fake camera! They are debunked just as easily, further fueling the burglar’s determination to rob your home. Of course, you can always opt for signs with a generic message written on them, such as “24hr video surveillance” from Amazon, but they won’t be able to protect you on their own.
Just because you aim to save big time on your security system doesn’t mean there are no other ways to protect yourself. Complement the yard signs and decals with several inexpensive alarms and sirens. Place a door stop alarm under the front door and set up a hanging door alarm in the master bedroom, since it’s typically the main target for burglars. A barking dog alarm is far more sinister than a fake camera and if you are really up to playing mind games, then deploy fake TV lights that give the impression that the building is full of life even in the middle of night.
