Most people hear open source and think cheap, ugly, not good, and free software not designed for business applications. In reality, you will find that here are many quality open source applications designed and ready to bring your business to the next level. For important aspects of business such as email marketing, there are several open source solutions. poMMo and OpenEMM are two software solutions you might want to choose from if you’re in the market for an open source email marketing service.

OpenEMM (Open Email Marketing Manager) was the first open source marketing application to be developed. First launched in 1999, it is the most popular free, open source marketing tool on the market, and it is used by companies all over the world such as IBM, Daimler, Siemens, and Deutsche Telekom.
You can use it for everything from single events to time-sensitive sales, and it is highly customizable. It has a very basic WYSIWYG interface and it lets you target your message as you see fit. It even provides real-time statistics to let you quickly know how well your campaigns are working. OpenEMM might not be the prettiest solution, but it is a well-documented and powerful tool to handle all your email marketing needs.
poMMo is a free email marketing service that is both easy to use and customize. There is only one file that you need to edit in order to install the service and that is only to connect it to your database. So it essentially installs itself.
It is a lightweight solution with a small overhead footprint that can fit on servers of any size. With poMMo, you can create subscriber groups with ease, quickly import and export data, and customize every bit of the interface including all form fields. You can even throttle how often poMMO sends out your emails.
In spite of all the good it does, poMMo is not perfect and it has a number of flaws that prevent you from using it. For one, it is not completely compatible with Firefox and similar web browsers out of the box. There is no bounce processor so you have to unsubscribe all invalid email addresses manually. Finally, poMMo is no longer in development. It is a great piece of software, but you might have to either live with any bugs you find or fix then yourself.
There are of course many other free, open source and paid email marketing services out there. They have names like phpList and Tellmatic, and they all have the same basic features like double opt-in subscription, post scheduling, and list segmentation. However, none of them are as easy to use or as customizable as OpenEMM or poMMo. They are both free high performing email marketing solutions that keep you in control of every step in the process.
