Monitronics is a company with decade long experience when it comes to protecting homes and automating safety devices. The company licenses some of the most dependable monitoring equipment from manufacturers, and offers a wide variety of threat detectors, cameras and motion sensors. The base hub is an easy to use touchscreen keypad that is enhanced with the extra service of Monitronics’ own smartphone application, called HomeTouch. The app grants access to the automated light systems, door and garage locks or the smart thermostat. The company also thought about personal safety, thus it provides a medical alert system for elders or recovering patients. Monitronics has three different home alarm packages, starting from $34.95 per month, and installs all systems free of a charge.

Security equipment is the strong point of Monitronics. A very satisfying list of keypads, detectors, sensors and remote controls are available. There are three kinds of keypads, all incorporating an easy-to-use touch-screen technology and a wireless design. They have multifunctional capabilities, allowing you to operate items such as garage doors, locks or lightings remotely, in a similar fashion as the smartphone application does. They even have access to weather forecasts, alarming the family when a storm or a natural disaster is inbound.

Smoke, heat or carbon monoxide detectors are noteworthy additions to any households, as they can save the family members from various deadly threats. Unlike regular alarms that can be bought from a shop, these detection devices are in constant connection with the monitoring center of Monitronics, that will be alarmed when an emergency occurs, thus contributing to solving the situation by speeding up the arrival of the emergency personnel. Motion sensors play an important role in protecting your home. They serve distinct purposes, ranging from detecting movement to being able to recognize if someone tries to break a window or tampers with the locks. Moisture and freeze sensors are valuable assets as well in homes that are prone to extreme level of flooding or cold temperature.

Video surveillance

Cameras can prove to be just as useful, as they are the “eye” of the resident, silently watching anyone approaching your property. Monitronics can cater anyone looking for a reliable guardian. There are indoor and outdoor cameras available, image sensors that capture an image only if they sense movement, Wi-Fi cameras with night vision, not to mention the fixed angle and rotatable cameras that can cover a large amount of space. All footage recorded by the devices is accessible from the computer or smartphones.

Monitronics provides free installation for those who are in the approximate range of their service. Otherwise, it’s advised to contact the company about the setup. All equipment comes with a limited time warranty, granting replacement for damaged products and even after the warranty is expired, repair is available for a fee.

The status of the home alert system can be easily checked on the full-color keypad or by using the unique smartphone application, HomeTouch, which is available for both iOS and Android smartphones, tablets and other systems. The service regularly summarizes the past events and notifies you when the motion sensors or cameras discovered something noteworthy. HomeTouch also controls the intelligent lighting, door and garage locks or the temperature through the smart thermostat. It is a great way to keep the control of your home in your own hand.

For an additional fee, homeowners can rely on an expert team of security agents, who constantly supervise the selected systems and quickly react to emergency calls. If necessary, they dispatch the police or alert you. All operators are CSAA certified, and completed a long training course to learn how to handle dire situations in a professional manner. The main advantage of having your home monitored by Monitronics is that people will keep an eye on the system even if you are sleeping or on a holiday. The devices will signal to the center when detecting a break-in and operators will act on your behalf to protect your property.

Medical alert service

The medical alert service is a new addition in the company’s offer. It’s a combination of home security and medical alert services, granting customers similar advantages to the regular home protection packages – like motion sensors and smartphone applications – coupled with 24/7 medical monitoring and a wearable emergency button. This is an ideal addition for people who need constant supervision, like patients or elders, although most seniors would find the touch-screen pad and the other modern devices a nuisance, and wouldn’t use them. It’s also a setback that the medical alert packages are almost similar to the more expensive security packages, and there is no way to have basic medical alert package without unwanted extras.

Home automation

Being smart is the key to keep everything in order. And the best way to optimize the efficiency of your home is to fit it with intelligent automatization devices. Monitronics is on top of things when it comes to smart systems: whether to serve protection or convenience, the company has a suitable solution. HomeTouch Automation allows you to remotely operate the locks, cameras, lightings and thermostat using a smartphone or tablet. The technology enables the user to check the person standing at the front door and give admittance by unlocking it, without standing up from the comfy sofa. Rushing to work is also easier, since HomeTouch knows how to open and close the garage door remotely, thus sparing the driver from a frustrating task. Another useful feature of the app is automating the lights, giving the impression that the residents are at home, which is a great way to prevent a robbery. Lastly, managing the thermostat from a smart device not only ensures the perfect temperature all year, but also provides a surefire way to prevent unnecessarily high energy bills.

Pricing

Monitronics offers homeowners three kinds of security alarm packages: Basic Security, HomeTouch Security and HomeTouch Premium. All three packages involve a monthly monitoring fee and a one-time activation fee. Unfortunately, there is no room for customized packages. The initial commitment time is between 36-60 months. The offer doesn’t include free shipping, but in certain areas a free professional installation can be requested from the customer service. All equipment comes with a limited warranty, and after the period runs out, the repair service can be availed for an extra $50. Another $50 is charged for every false alarm, unless a list of specific conditions are met. For those who are using Monitronics’ service longer than a year, the company allows to relocate the system when you move to another location.

Home security systems

Monitronics’ most budget-friendly package is called Basic Security. For a monthly $34.95, and a one-time $99, customers receive a full-color touchpad that serves as the hub for all the security equipment, a keychain, yard signs to inform wannabe-burglars to stay away from the property, 3 window or door sensors in case they still persist to break in, and an intelligent motion detector that only alarms when detecting humans, but letting household pets pass by. The system is installed for free, but doesn’t include the extra services through the app, leaving out important features.

HomeTouch Security expands the list with the smartphone and tablet application that enables users to operate and summarize the functionality of their security systems, as well as the local weather alert forecast. It starts from $44.95 per month, and the installation fee is $99. Lastly, HomeTouch Premium is the superior service. It adds two-way voice capability and an indoor camera to the already wide list of features, and empowers HomeTouch to handle the home automation units, although they must be purchased separately.

Medical alert systems

Monitronics offers two variations for independence seeking elders or recovering patients. HomeTouch Care is the standard service: it includes 24/7 access to the monitoring center, who can be contacted during a medical emergency. The list of equipment is just as satisfying: a medical pendant or watch, which is in constant link with the full-color touch-pad, 3 door or window sensor to notice unauthorized intrusions, a pet-sensitive motion detector, yard signs, and a keychain remote. The smartphone application is able to provide feedback on all these systems, plus notifies the user about extreme weather conditions. The monthly price starts from $46.95, includes free installation, and the activation costs $99. HomeTouch Plus is a step up to the previous version, adding an indoor video camera to the list, and allowing HomeTouch to remotely handle home automation devices in case they are purchased as well. HomeTouch Plus has quite a hefty monthly monitoring fee of $56.95, coupled with the installation fee costing $149.

Security equipment

For those who wish to have their home monitored by Monitronics, the service can be requested from a monthly price of $34.95. The above mentioned home security packages include the access to remote access devices, detectors and motions sensors. However products themselves are sold separately. Cameras start from $54.95 per month, while sensors and detectors can come for a price as low as $34.95 for a month. Remotes range from $34.95-$54.95, depending on the device.

Monitronics aims to keep the customer relations in high priority, which is demonstrated by their A-rating from the Better Business Bureau. The company has an informative website, highlighting all the details customers might be interested in, and they’re not hiding the prices either. The customer service representatives can be reached over the phone, or alternatively a question can be addressed via an online form. The website presents numerous video tutorials about the service, which is a great way to come to know it before opting for any of the systems. Monitronics is also present at Facebook and other popular social media sites, posting interesting articles regularly.

Bottom line

Monitronics offers a strong and tested home security system with a good deal of home automation features. The monitoring service is certified, and replies instantly for a call. The detector units cover fire, smoke, carbon monoxide leaking, floods, glass break and freezing for complete overall protection of your home. Home automation and video surveillance are also present, connected together by a rich and comprehensive smartphone application. Medical monitoring for elders and patients is available, however it’s not really differentiated from the home security solutions, and the deal is missing a low-budget variation. On the downside, home alert packages have a high activation fee and monthly cost, and home automation is only possible with the most expensive service.

Buyer beware, a contract is a contract is a contract with Moni, no exceptions! We sold a home with a contract in place & the new buyer agreed to take over, so we set up new service at our new home. Paid $700 installation on the new home, 4 year contract. Later learned that the buyer for the old home went with another provider due to better pricing, so we were stuck paying out the old contract. They didn’t care that we had set up the quite expensive new contract, nor that we had been customers at multiple homes for many years with their organization. They don’t care about customer loyalty. You have a contract, you pay it out, period. Completely inflexible and not customer friendly. Plus expect to stay on hold for long periods every time you call them. Will never use them again.
