XFINITY, a division of Comcast Cable Communications, is especially known for providing internet, phone services and cable TV, and is rapidly branching out into other product categories. Home security is a relatively new leaf in XFINITY’s setout, but subscribers can expect good quality nonetheless. XFINITY Home protects people’s homes from home intrusions by utilizing equipment from well-renowned brands. Besides the basic alert equipment – like surveillance cameras, movement detectors and locks – home automation systems are available as well, helping homeowners to spare up to 10% on the electric bills by managing the thermostat and lightings remotely. There are four types of packages, and there are options for extra customization too. People who already have a security system might also want to opt for the service, as most equipment can be carried over with the company’s system.

The strength of any home security system is indicated by the richness and quality of alert equipment presented by the company. XFINITY Home has a decent amount of devices available that manage to cover every possible situation homeowners might want to defend themselves from. Bear in mind that XFINITY’s security packages only contain a limited number of equipment, and extra items – such as the fire detectors – must be purchased separately. However, this does give you freedom to customize your setup to match specifically match your home and needs and not having to pay for equipment you don’t need anyway. XFINITY Home licensed equipment with some of the best hardware manufacturers, but if you already own security equipment you shouldn’t worry either: XFINITY Home pledges to update and warrant pre-existing systems, in case their condition meets the company’s standards. The full color touchscreen base station of XFINITY Home

Cameras and Smart Locks

Cameras are integral parts of any home alert service. They are the “eyes” of the system, silently recording any suspicious on-goings around the house. XFINITY Home offers only one kind of camera type, but it can be used for both indoor and outdoor purposes. It’s small and easy to hitch into anywhere. The wireless connection makes it easy to access any recorded footage using a smartphone, tablet or computer. Smart locks are a complimentary technology to cameras, as the intelligent front door and garage locks sold by XFINITY Home can be closed with a simple command from the smartphone, right after the surveillance cameras detected lurking strangers.

Detectors

The company has a large supply of motion sensors and threat detectors to further increase the safety of your home. Besides getting sufficient window and door sensors, consider purchasing a motion detector, as it’s easy to hide it in the hallways and rooms, and a built-in algorithm is able to strain of pets to avoid giving false alarms. Flood and smoke detectors are equally useful, but they are helpful against fire and raising water level.

The monitoring service behind XFINITY Home provides peace of mind for homeowners 24/7. The certification from Underwriters Laboratories is the assurance of the central station’s high-quality work and commitment. Subscribers also receive access to a personal account on the company’s website, where they can manage their expenses, pay bills, or review recent alerts. It’s a great way to become environmental, and protect the rainforest by choosing electronic bills instead of paper based ones. Comcast even has a special smartphone application just for these tasks, which separates from the app used for handling your security appliances.

Works with XFINITY home

Having a smartphone and tablet application to remotely manage the security equipment is a fairly common – if not crucial – feature in the home security industry. But while most companies have an app that only works with their own equipment, XFINITY Home’s application (XFINITY Home) works with equipment by numerous brands, including Lutron, August, Chamberlain and so on. This is a huge relief for subscribers who already invested in a home security equipment, as they aren’t forced to needlessly buy another package just to synchronize it with the app. The XFINITY Home app is a platform where all smart devices converge. The user is able to check the status of the lighting, watch footage from the video cameras, remotely lock the doors, set the temperature through the smart thermostat or open and close the door to spare some time when leaving the home. It’s up to you to set how often you wish to receive notifications from the system, thus staying well-informed far away from your home.

Home Automation

XFINITY Home offers two kinds of home automatization options. One is affecting the lighting in your house, while the other changes the temperature. The intelligent lighting system, produced by Lutron, is the surefire way to remotely manage the lights inside the house, while also saving money. No tools are required to install it: just plug it into a power outlet where the lamps are connected, sit back, and change the brightness to your liking using your smartphone or the central keypad. By skillfully managing the lighting through this system, you can save up to 10% on your electric bill.

The thermostat Nest has produced is really worthy of the title “smart”. This intelligent system by this Alphabet Inc. company is able to adapt to the family’s habit, and helps the residents set the optimal temperature inside the house. It can also be scheduled to heat up or cool down the rooms in a timely manner. It doesn’t require professional installation, and is easily customizable from a bigger distance thanks to the smartphone connection.

Pricing

XFINITY Home packages can be ordered from the website or by calling them over the phone. A custom quote can be requested as well. It’s noteworthy that XFINITY Home licensed equipment from numerous brands, thus the warranty time greatly differs. The company offers to update pre-existing systems, adding the monitoring service and smartphone application to the security equipment the subscribers already owns, reducing the costs. This is possible only if certain conditions are met.

Monitoring services

The company offers four types of packages, which can be further customized by adding extra items. Although these four offers differ in their content and prices, there are some similarities they share. Control 150 is the least expensive package, costing only $19.95 per month. It includes access to the smartphone application, and has a decent array of equipment, including a central hub, motion and window sensors, a light controller plus a camera or thermostat, depending on your choice. But be aware that security monitoring is not part of the deal. These products can be self-installed using a provided how-to-do kit, but professional installation is an option too, for a one-time fee of $99.

Secure 300 is a step-up to the previous offer, as it grants homeowners a touch-screen controller instead of a standard central hub, and adds professional monitoring to the list. It also includes three door or window sensors, a motion detector and a wireless keypad. Customers can enjoy free assessment along the professional installation, although the latter still costs $99. The monthly fee starts from $39.95. Secure 350 further expands the array of equipment with two extra cameras, two lighting controllers and a thermostat. The monitoring fee is $49.95 for a month. The great amount of equipment demands professional installation, which leads to a set-up fee of $399.

Lastly, XFINITY Home provides a special bundle for those who also wish to have a stellar internet connection along the full protection. Secure 300 & Blast merged all the advantages of the Secure 300 offer, but also complements it with XFINITY’s own internet service, which allows up to 75 Mbs download speed. As most system works through wireless technology, having a fast internet connection is a clever choice.

Security equipment

None of the packages include fire or water detection, thus customers can only integrate them by purchasing them in addition. The smoke detector comes for a one-time fee of $99.95, while the water sensor costs $39.95. The situation is the same with the garage and door locks. The Chamberlain remote garage opener uses Wi-Fi connection, has three years of battery life, and costs $129. The August Smart Lock & August Connect are wireless smart locks that can be locked and unlocked from a smartphone for a price of $299.98 each. Any additional indoor or outdoor camera comes for $129.99, while the smart thermostat has a price of $129.95.

XFINITY is currently not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, though their customer service and problem handling skills earned them an A- rating. The website is more than informative, giving you a clear presentation of all the product prices, the details of the equipment brands, the warranty. In addition, XFINITY’s other services are just a click away. The homepage offers the chance to create a profile and manage the expenses from there. The company is present on popular social media sites, but XFINITY Home isn’t separated from other services. A YouTube channel is also available, but XFINITY Home only has one related video.

Bottom line

Although home security alarm monitoring isn’t the main activity of XFINITY, the company provides a decent service. All the basic features are present, and XFINITY Home is armed with equipment licensed from experienced brands. Sadly there are some popular features that are missing, like glass break sensors or intercoms, and there is only one kind of video camera. The monitoring service is ready to help subscribers 24/7, the prices are reasonable, and the security equipment is converged in a simple platform that is accessible from smartphones, tablets or computers. The biggest advantage XFINITY Home brings to the table is the high level of flexibility with existing setups and reuse of your existing security equipment.
