Nest is among the most recognized hardware manufacturers, specialized in home security and home automation. As you may know, home security providers rarely work with their own equipment and instead they rely on licensing alarms, environmental detectors, cameras and other devices from a given manufacturer, and tie them into colorful packages. Even though Nest sells its products separately to customers, they can be paired up with other security systems as well. Home alarm companies partner with Nest to make their systems and their apps fully compatible with Nest’s hardware, forming the perfect marriage between home security and home automation.
The company, owned by Google’s mother company Alphabet, offers four types of items: an intelligent thermostat, a smoke detector, plus an indoor and outdoor camera. All four of them put a strong emphasis on smartphone features. The intelligent thermostat is capable of learning the habits and temperature preference of the family members, and programs itself according to the season. It even helps you lower your bills with its energy saving mode. The smoke detector lasts for a decade, and it’s compliant with the highest industry standards. It can send notifications to your smartphone, not to mention the device gives you a vocal reminder about your omelet while the smoke is in non-lethal quantity.
The indoor and outdoor cameras are both able to record long sessions of HD footage that is streamed to your phone and remains in the cloud for a whole month. As a bonus feature, the former is fitted with a voice model to scare away burglars, while the latter is highly water resistant.
Interestingly, the most popular Nest product among home security providers is the intelligent thermostat. The reason behind this is that they already have a lineup of cameras and smoke detectors, but they often lack home automation units, thus they pair up their system with the Nest thermostat. GetSafe and ADT are two fine examples of companies, who further elevate their line of products with Nest.
GetSafe believes in the power of compact security: all alarms and detectors in the starter pack have double functions. The door & window detectors have temperature sensors, the siren sends text notifications when startled, and the motion detector is pet sensitive. GetSafe also supports Z-Wave home automation units alongside the Nest Learning Thermostat. ADT is more traditional, but has a wider variety of alarms. The company offers both home and business security solutions, and all alarms work via cellular network. The ADT Pulse smartphone application is their all-in-one remote for every device, including the Nest Thermostat.
