Not to mention that professional camera monitoring is regarded as the most expensive of all the monitoring plans. No wonder people would rather rely on alternative defense units, like door stop alarms and barking dog alarms. But the truth is, nothing can stand up to a top tier surveillance system, which also has a not insignificant deterrent value. This was the exact thought process behind the latest home security incentive program, launched by the mayor of D.C.

Private security camera incentive program

In 2016 Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the city’s newest program, offering low-income citizens rebates on purchasing and installing security cameras. There are two ways to participate in the program. Citizens can either opt for a discount of up to $200 or get the private security system for free if the family is proven to be eligible for it. The council of D.C. aims to deter criminals from targeting the homes partaking in the program, but hope that having a surveillance camera set up in a street extends the protection to neighboring buildings as well.

However, there is a catch. Only outdoor surveillance systems are eligible for a rebate, so you won’t be able to bag in professional alarms and sensors this way. In addition, members of the program must register their camera with the police department, who might request access to the footage in cases where it helps an investigation.
