The biggest problem with a truly comprehensive alarm package is that it bleeds your wallet dry. Cameras are quite expensive by themselves, let alone the amount you would additionally pay for the cloud storage and live streaming service as well.
Not to mention that professional camera monitoring is regarded as the most expensive of all the monitoring plans. No wonder people would rather rely on alternative defense units, like door stop alarms and barking dog alarms. But the truth is, nothing can stand up to a top tier surveillance system, which also has a not insignificant deterrent value. This was the exact thought process behind the latest home security incentive program, launched by the mayor of D.C.
In 2016 Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the city’s newest program, offering low-income citizens rebates on purchasing and installing security cameras. There are two ways to participate in the program. Citizens can either opt for a discount of up to $200 or get the private security system for free if the family is proven to be eligible for it. The council of D.C. aims to deter criminals from targeting the homes partaking in the program, but hope that having a surveillance camera set up in a street extends the protection to neighboring buildings as well.
However, there is a catch. Only outdoor surveillance systems are eligible for a rebate, so you won’t be able to bag in professional alarms and sensors this way. In addition, members of the program must register their camera with the police department, who might request access to the footage in cases where it helps an investigation.
Sadly, the Council of D.C. is the only state offering such incentives on a governmental level, so residents from other parts of the country must look for other methods if they wish to save on the alarm system. The most obvious way to cut down on the expenses is to keep an eye on popular home security companies, as they frequently feature discounts and special deals on popular devices. Christmas, Black Friday and summer are just a few events prompting companies to be more generous with the price tags. It’s also worth mentioning that longer commitments often yield a large discount on the monthly monitoring fee, while choosing a bundle offer grants similar results with the device price. In certain cases pre-existing alarm systems can be also integrated by connecting wired alarms to the otherwise wireless system.
