Emergency vet care can be emotionally and financially challenging for pet parents. Luckily, pet insurance providers like Healthy Paws help ease this burden by covering any accidents or new illnesses that your furry companion may come to endure.

Prices for pet insurance vary depending on whether you’re insuring a cat or a dog, your pet’s age, and your selected reimbursement and deductible options. With some providers, coverage can also differ based on your plan and add-ons.

With reasonable policy prices and occasional discounts available via the friend referral program and seasonal promotions, Healthy Paws is certainly an all-rounder.

Healthy Paws offers different insurance plans depending on whether you have a cat or a dog. In both cases, all life stages are covered – from kitten or puppy to senior pet, you can rest assured your companion has lifetime coverage. Depending on your state, your pet can be enrolled up to their 14th birthday. Unfortunately, there are no plans for exotic pets.

Wellness or routine care is also not included or offered as an add-on, as Healthy Paws focuses on unplanned vet appointments. Its plan coverage includes:

  • Diagnostics
  • Treatments
  • Surgery
  • Medications
  • Euthanasia, when medically necessary
  • Any new illnesses or injuries, ranging from cancer to emergency and alternative care
  • Genetic or hereditary and breed-specific conditions, if they appear after the waiting period

However, hip dysplasia is only covered if you enrolled your pet before age six.

This pet insurance company stands out from the competition due to its no-limits policy, meaning there are no caps on payouts. An added bonus is that you’re not limited to a network of vets and can choose any licensed veterinarian in the U.S., or even if you’re traveling in Canada.

There is a 15-day waiting period, except for hip dysplasia, which entails a 12-month waiting period if you enrolled your furry companion at age 5 or before. Make sure you always read the company’s policy for your state before making a decision, as each state may be subject to specific regulations.

Claims can easily be submitted online or through the Healthy Paws mobile app. To do so, all you need to do is take a photo of your veterinary invoice and upload it, wait for the claim to be processed, and receive the reimbursement. This way, a claim form is not required.

If you prefer to submit one, you can download a pre-populated claim form in your Customer Center. The claim form and invoice can be emailed to [email protected], faxed to (888) 228-4129, or mailed to Healthy Paws' P.O. box.

Make sure you have your pet’s full medical records from your vet when filing your first claim, as the claims representatives need to review these. The medical records can be uploaded in your Customer Center, under Upload Medical Records, or your vet can email them to [email protected] or fax them to (844) 333-0739.

Processing and reimbursement

Healthy Paws is committed to processing claims as quickly as possible, aiming to do so within 2-10 business days. Reimbursement for approved claims is generally issued within 24 business hours.

It can take up to 15 days to reach your location if sent by mailed check, or up to 72 hours to process if sent through direct deposit, depending on your bank. Checks are valid for 6 months from the date they are issued, and direct deposits are issued via ACH.

If you can’t pay at the time of treatment, you can contact Healthy Paws to make a direct payment to your vet. To do so, you can call (855) 898-8991 during business hours and select the option to speak with a claims representative.

This request must be made in advance to ensure the claims team has time to coordinate with your vet to access your pet’s medical records and process the payment, and approval for any direct payments isn’t synonymous with a covered claim. The insured party remains responsible for all amounts due.

You can customize your Healthy Paws policy’s reimbursement percentage and annual deductible, with options ranging from 50% to 80% and $250 to $1,000, respectively.

If the policyholder hasn’t submitted any claims, deductibles can be lowered, and the reimbursement level increased. However, this will mean a higher monthly premium due to lower out-of-pocket expenses and a higher reimbursement amount. If claims have already been submitted, deductibles can only be raised, and the reimbursement level lowered.

There is also a friend referral program that can give you and your referred friends or family a discount when they enroll in a Healthy Paws plan through your referral link.

While individual claim submissions won’t increase your premium, it might be subject to change based on the overall claims experience within your region, your state’s insurance regulator, your pet’s age and breed, and other elements.

Claim payouts are unlimited, while your pet’s deductible is annual and resets on the anniversary of your pet’s enrollment. Reimbursements are based on your vet bills and are determined by the claims representatives. The total of the covered treatments, if any, is determined and multiplied by your reimbursement rate. The last step is subtracting your remaining annual deductible.

To maximize your annual deductible, it’s recommended that you submit all claims pertaining to accidents, illnesses, and injuries.

Enrollment and cancellation

Enrollment and cancellation
Minimum enrollment age8 weeks
Maximum enrollment age14 years

You can easily enroll by getting your pet insurance quote through the Healthy Paws website. If you have any questions, you can contact the provider at (855) 898-8991.

You must provide a complete exam of your pet to benefit from Healthy Paws. Generally, for pets aged five or below, the examination must happen within the last 12 months before enrolling, or within the last 30 days for pets aged six and above. No matter the age, if an exam wasn’t performed prior to purchasing a policy, it must be done within the first 15 days of enrollment.

Cancellation requests can be made by fax, regular mail, email, or phone. If the cancellation request is made within the first 30 days of enrollment and no claims have been filed, policyholders will receive a full refund. Unfortunately, refunds are not available in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.

On its website, Healthy Paws warns that once your policy is canceled, pet parents will no longer have access to the Customer Center. Additionally, the provider also offers a warning that if you’ve filed any claims with Healthy Paws, it’s likely that injuries or illnesses that have been covered by their policy will be considered pre-existing and not eligible for coverage with another pet insurance provider.

Healthy Paws' customer service is available by email, through a form on the company’s Contact Us page, or by phone. While the form is readily available, the phone line is only open from 7 am to 5 pm PT Monday through Friday and 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday. Other support resources are available in the Customer Center and FAQ section of the website.

When the support team is dealing with an unusually high volume of phone requests, a disclaimer will be promptly displayed on the support sections of the Healthy Paws website. However, customers have previously complained about the unresponsiveness they’ve been met with, whether through email or phone.

Healthy Paws is also active on social media, including Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, and even Pinterest. However, most comments seem to go unanswered.

Bottom line

Healthy Paws boasts unlimited caps on claims payouts, no add-ons, and the flexibility of choosing your preferred licensed veterinarian. While pre-existing illnesses are not covered, it’s impressive that hereditary and congenital conditions that manifest after enrollment waiting periods are eligible for coverage, which isn’t always the case with competitors.

While examination fees and preventative care are not covered, there are no caps or maximum limits, and you’re not restricted to a network of vets. This is ideal for those who already have a preferred vet in mind.

Healthy Paws proves to be a relevant choice for pet parents who are willing to pay for preventative care while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with their insurance policy. Keep an eye out for seasonal discounts and the friend referral program to reduce the costs of your insurance plan.
