Embrace Pet Insurance has two main insurance plans: one covers accidents only, and the other covers both accidents and illness. Technically, there is a third one – Wellness Rewards – which can be signed up for alongside the other plans.

The accident plan is pretty straightforward. It covers all new accidents that happen after the waiting period, which is the three days following the purchase of the policy. As with all insurance, however, accidents caused by preexisting conditions are not covered.

This plan includes broken bones, car accidents, poisoning, cuts and lacerations, and more. It’s possible to add exam fee reimbursements for (covered) incidents, as well as the prescriptions used to treat or manage the conditions.

Embrace Pet Insurance coverage

As expected, the accident and illness plan provides more extensive coverage and protection. The waiting period is 14 days, much longer than the accidents-only plan. Genetic and congenital conditions, alternative care, and behavioral therapy are all included in this plan.

Both plans cover vet exams, which we found to be an unusual and very welcome element to be included by a pet insurance company. It’s definitely a pleasant surprise, as taking a kitty or a pooch for a checkup can be expensive. No plan covers pre-existing conditions and breed-related diseases.

Currently, only cats and dogs are accepted by Embrace Pet Insurance, and they must be at least six weeks old to be eligible. Pets older than 14 are accepted but are only eligible for the accident plan, which is a bit disappointing but still better than most companies.

Wellness plans and extras

While Embrace Pet Insurance typically does not cover preventative care – such as vaccinations, nontraumatic dental care, and even spaying and neutering, this is included in the Wellness Rewards plan.

This add-on functions like a health savings account to make routine pet care less financially taxing. It includes preventative care needs like:

  • Wellness exams.
  • Vaccines and titers.
  • Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
  • Routine gland expression.
  • Grooming, toenail trimming, medicated shampoos, and training.
  • Cremation and burial.
  • Microchipping and spaying/neutering.
  • Blood and fecal tests.
  • Preventative dental cleaning.
  • Alternative treatments.

Preexisting conditions, breeding-related conditions, cosmetic surgeries, and DNA testing or cloning will not be covered, regardless of the plan you choose.

Embrace Pet Insurance is passionate about pets and dedicated to saving their lives. The provider actively raises funds for charity and matches 100% of all team members’ charitable donations.

Submitting claims is simple. Beyond its browser version, Embrace Pet Insurance also has a mobile app, which significantly facilitates the process. Users can submit claims by simply photographing the itemized invoice and attaching it to the platform. A claim form will also be needed for those who want to submit a claim via email, fax, or paper.

Once the claim is submitted, Embrace Pet Insurance sends an email confirming it has been received. The claim’s status is easily accessible in the account to simplify tracking.

Processing and reimbursement

If users provide the necessary information, claims are processed within 10-15 business days. If something’s missing, Embrace Pet Insurance will contact the customer’s vet and update the necessary information in their account.

Once a claim is approved, the company will send the customer the level of refund specified in the policy. Covered claims may arrive by check in the mail or via direct deposits. Customers will always be required to pay the vet in full first without the possibility of the insurer paying the vet directly.

Nonetheless, Embrace Pet Insurance is quick to send the reimbursement. The check option can take up to 10 business days, but the direct deposit should arrive within three business days.

Policies at Embrace Pet Insurance are fully customizable, with the exception of the accident plan. Customers can choose the reimbursement percentage and limit, as well as the annual deductible.

A higher reimbursement percentage will increase monthly costs, and raising your deductible lowers rates. The highest reimbursement level is 90%, and deductibles range from $100 to $1,000.

Embrace Pet Insurance has annual payout limits, which can also be tailored to personal needs. Of course, the higher the payout, the more costly the service is, but on the positive side, there are no lifetime caps to worry about. Payout options range from $2,000 to unlimited.

Insurance rates vary from pet to pet based on factors such as species, breed, age, size, and even zip code.

Vet with dog and cat

To make its policies more accessible, Embrace Pet Insurance offers discounts. First of all, the provider is the only pet insurance provider that offers a diminishing deductible, reducing it by $50 for each year that no claims are submitted.

Covering multiple pets also pays off, with a 10% reduction of the premium for each. Active or former military members also get 5% off their pet insurance.

An insurance policy can be purchased by calling Embrace Pet Insurance's customer service or by visiting the website. We found the enrollment process fairly easy. When we accessed the site, a prompt to request a quote immediately appeared.

After that, all we had to do was answer the questions about the pet, such as size and age, on the ‘get a quote’ page. Customization options are also offered here, and the wellness plan can be chosen as an add-on.

Once the MyEmbrace account is created, it’s time to confirm the pet’s vet history. Customers need to report if the pet has visited a vet in the last 12 months. If not, the pet must have a check-up within the first 14 days of the policy for coverage to begin.

If customers are ensuring a dog, it’s recommended that you hand over an orthopedic report card so that the dog is covered for broken bones, torn muscles, and ligament or joint-related issues for the first six months.

Adjusting a policy after signing up is also hassle-free. Pet parents can opt to downgrade or upgrade at any time, but it’s best to keep in mind that downgrading may impact coverage. Canceling the insurance is easy, you just need to contact the Embrace Pet Insurance's team via phone or email.

Embrace Pet Insurance's customer support is accessible by email and phone, but the latter is only available from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (ET) Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. However, some users have complained that the phone line has long wait times, which is actually stated as a disclaimer on the provider’s website.

Still, Embrace Pet Insurance's website is filled with articles and FAQs to help users answer questions about everything insurance-related. It even has a blog on topics such as how to socialize a dog and pet insurance 101. The provider is also active on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn, sharing updates and pet insurance content.

The best thing about Embrace Pet Insurance is its PawSupport, which gives customers 24/7 access to pet professionals who can provide decision-making support on emergencies, medication concerns, behavioral changes, and more. This service is available at no extra cost with every policy.

Bottom line

When it comes to pet insurance, Embrace Pet Insurance doesn’t bark up the wrong tree. It delivers high-coverage customizable policies that put our furry friends first. We found it impressive that even exam fees are eligible for reimbursement, which is enough to tip the scales in its favor compared to other providers.

Expanding or limiting coverage using the different plans is a definite bonus, especially since older or sick pets who would otherwise be challenging to insure can benefit from accident protection for a reduced monthly premium.

While the company does have payout caps and doesn’t offer a direct vet payment option, it compensates by having good coverage and prices. We love the addition of the 24/7 PawSupport, which allows owners to contact professionals any day, at any time, for no additional cost.

In the end, Embrace Pet Insurance proves to be a solid choice for those looking for an affordable and reliable pet insurance service.
