There is something inherently gratifying on reporting about the success of a home security system. People purchase such devices as a pre-emptive move, as a means to arm themselves against a possible home invasion. In most cases they are just sitting there quietly catching dust, but when a robbery falls flat thanks to your alarm the proud feeling in your chest is indescribable. For educational purposes we’ll introduce three stories about burglaries and accidents in which home security systems played a key role, and show you the important takeaways of each of them.
The first story involves a petty thief in Dallas who unexpectedly found himself in the middle of a reality show, hosted by the homeowner.
The ‘star’ of the show was ransacking the residence looking for valuables, knowing that the owner was away celebrating Easter with his family. However, the burglar was unaware of the fact that all his movements were recorded by a smart camera system that instantly notified the ‘producer’ that a private show was taking place. The audience, or rather the police, were very grateful for the footage.
A similar case popped up in Brooklyn Park. A woman contacted the police claiming that she is witnessing a burglary in progress through her smart home security system. The thieves fled, but were arrested after a brief chase. They probably had a shocking realization upon hearing that Big Brother was watching them all along. The last case isn’t related to burglary, but interesting nonetheless. A Pennsville man’s home security system recorded a near-fatal car crash on the road. The driver lost control over the vehicle, flew through a utility pole, and finished with some flips before stopping. Luckily for him the accident was witnessed by the homeowner, and help arrived soon.
All three stories underline the importance of having a complete, perhaps even smart home security system. Setting up surveillance cameras inside and outside the house proves to be useful in more than one way. Cameras nowadays are capable of sending an email or SMS notification when an alarm is triggered, so the homeowner can check the live video feed right away. Being able to record the action of the criminals is invaluable for the upcoming police investigation. It provides clues for the officers on where to find fingerprints, not to mention the thief’s height can be determined by comparing it to the surroundings. Most thugs are also carelessly chatting during the robbing, which is more evidence that can be used against them. As you can see, remote monitoring is a weapon that helps apprehending the criminals even if they escape.
