Click to Dial: A Link to Start a Call

Click to Dial: A Link to Start a Call

Even though telephony has seen many changes over the last two centuries, its basics have largely remained the same: if we want to make a phone call then we dial a phone number. It’s a simple process for everyone, but when that the same process is repeated over and over again with different phone numbers during a single day – which is a regular occurrence for businesses – this can easily become tedious and could even slow down the business workflow. And let’s be honest, customers also want to be connected to the company immediately without having to bother with searching for and typing in the right phone number.

This is where a neat little feature, click to dial, comes in handy, eliminating the need for entering phone numbers once and for all.

How click to call works

Click to dial – or click to call, if you wish – is a web-to-phone service provided via a special link placed on websites that instead of directing the caller to another site automatically dials a specified phone number or sends a request for a callback to that phone number.

The simple nature of it is actually one of the biggest advantages of click to dial, because creating a click to dial link is ridiculously easy – even for those who aren’t so fluent in website building. For instance, if you want the link to call RingCentral’s phone number, then all you have to do is to insert the following code into the draft of the webpage:

<a href="tel:+1-888-295-1724">[phone number or text saying i.e. ‘Click to Call']</a>

If applied correctly, the browser would display this example of +1-888-295-1724 as an actual phone number that can be dialed by simply clicking on it. Note, however, that using the hyphens between numbers, as well as the ‘+1′ prefix, is just a recommendation that ensures the linked number will be dialed from abroad, too.

But what happens if you want an image instead of plain text? Well, in that case the code changes to as follows:

<a href="tel:+1-888-295-1724"><img src="https://bestreviews.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/ringcentral-logo.png"/></a>

And this is how the above code looks when displayed by a browser:

However, no matter how simple it is to put together a click to dial link or image, there is one major limitation that needs to be taken into consideration: the link only works on devices that support telephony by default – such as smartphones and tablets – or at least have the necessary hardware and software through which calls can be handled.

Why is it better than plain phone numbers?

Even though click to dial has certain limitations its advantages still easily outweigh the disadvantages, especially when it comes to how well it serves clients and companies alike.

From the customers’ point of view, having a clickable phone number is not only more convenient than typing in that number manually, but the chances that they’ll eventually call the company will increase significantly, too. In addition to that, when they use this function these customers demonstrate a more serious interest in the company’s offerings, meaning that it’s very likely that they’ll end up purchasing something. Simply put, click to call separates potential customers from ordinary visitors.

Click to dial has benefits from the company’s standpoint, too, especially when a cloud phone system and a CRM solution are involved. Phone numbers displayed under each customer in the CRM automatically become clickable links, which results in a more streamlined business flow since employees don’t have to manually dial phone numbers.

Implementing click to dial the right way

We already explained how to create a click to call link or image, which is indeed an easy task to perform. Still, there is an even simpler method, as certain VoIP services like eVoice and MightyCall have a built-in feature with which the HTML code can be turned into an attractive click to call widget within seconds and place it anywhere on your site.

Additionally, these widget editors can create a plain link version of the click to call button, which can be used in email signatures to highlight phone numbers or even include images in the same fashion as click to dial widgets, therefore making such signatures even more professional. However, it’s worth noting that putting together such a signature may take some time, which could become tedious if multiple different signatures are required. Not to mention that it’s completely unnecessary; mobile browsers detect phone numbers and automatically turn them into web to phone links for you.
