Liechtenstein is not usually where people think of when they think about which country to connect to with their VPN service. That’s not too surprising when you consider that until recently this tiny landlocked country in Central Europe was only ever famous for being a tax haven of the super-rich. Although Liechtenstein isn’t a member of the European Union, it is still obliged to abide by EU law, however in spite of that it has very few online restrictions. Liechtenstein has surprisingly fast internet speeds which is great since users can get access to Netflix and Amazon Prime. Despite its small size, Liechtenstein is a great option for VPN users and there are plenty of VPN providers out there who have servers based in the microstate.
Liechtenstein is the least frequently visited country in Europe, so using a Liechtensteinian IP means the country could one day have more virtual tourists than real ones. One major advantage of using an IP from Liechtenstein is that the country boasts some surprisingly fast internet speeds. This is because Liechtenstein uses the same infrastructure as its next-door neighbor Switzerland, who has some of the highest average connection speeds on the planet. This makes it much more likely that your VPN server is going to have a quick connection, which is great for streaming and for P2P users.
As you would expect, there isn’t a lot of local content to stream in Liechtenstein. The country’s main channel 1FL TV doesn’t have a live feed, and videos on its website aren’t restricted by geoblocking. Local radio service Radio Liechtenstein also doesn’t geoblock and anyone around the world can listen to its live stream. However, thanks to its fellow German-speaking neighbors, users from Liechtenstein can sometimes access content from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.
Despite not being a full member of the European Union, Liechtenstein is a member of the European Economic Area, so it is obliged to apply EU laws that are considered relevant. This includes personal privacy laws meaning all data retention must be compliant with the 2018 GDPR regulations.
EU law also means Liechtenstein has the ability to block websites for copyright concerns, however as of 2018 it has yet to use this power and hasn’t blocked any websites. This means that currently P2P sharing isn’t an issue in Liechtenstein, but this could potentially change in the future.
Liechtenstein has very little restrictions on internet access or online communication. Websites are rarely blocked with the obvious exceptions of criminal matters like child pornography. Liechtensteinian law guarantees freedom of expression except public insults directed against race or ethnic groups but there is no history of the country blocking social media websites.
Gambling in Liechtenstein was technically illegal until 2010 although the country itself doesn’t have any casinos and there aren’t any Liechtensteinian gambling companies. However, since gambling’s legalization its citizens can freely browse international websites without any issues.
As you would expect for a country with a population of just over 37,000, Liechtenstein has no need for a large number of streaming services. Netflix and Amazon Prime are available, but keep in mind that they will be targeted towards German-speaking audiences. Hulu and BBC iPlayer and many other services aren’t available in the country, but Spotify is.
Streaming of local content is virtually non-existent besides the country’s one local radio network. Compared to nearby countries the overall streaming selection in Liechtenstein is tiny, but users should take into account the fast internet speeds in Liechtenstein.
Since Liechtenstein is such a small country, it’s hardly surprising that finding VPN services that use Liechtensteinian servers isn’t easy. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any, some of the best VPNs available do have Liechtenstein-based servers.
