In recent years, home automation took huge steps towards a safer future, thanks to the clever implementation of smartphones. Nowadays being able to arm and disarm your home defenses is nothing new. Then other smart solutions arrived, like intelligent thermostats and the light scheduler. Smartphones also double as your keys, since the automated garage doors and front doors can be opened and closed with a simple tap on the touchscreen. But remember the saying: there is no such thing as convenient enough. Those who find it a hassle when it comes to rummage their pocket for their mobile can now rejoice, as most of these features are also available on smartwatches.
A smartwatch brings back the past glory of the wristwatch by expanding the limits of the device beyond keeping tabs on time. This revolutionary invention shrinks down a smartphone into a wearable size, while keeping features like the full-color touchscreen, and the ability to answer calls, launch apps, listen to music or even watch movies. Although the convenience of watching a movie on your watch is debatable, it’s the perfect way to repurpose it as a remote for your smart home security systems.
That’s right; smartphones are utilized to act as a secondary means of managing your defenses. It’s capable of arming and disarming the alarms, set the temperature through the thermostat, turn up the lights and show the live video stream of your camera network. It’s hard to believe, but it’s even simpler than using your smartphone. All you need is a quick glance and a few taps on your smartwatch to check the notifications, or adjust the home’s protection level. It will always stay on your wrist, and you don’t even need to search your pockets for it. Not to mention it’s much safer to use it while in a car, as phones and driving is a highly accident-prone combo.
Home security companies also recognized the potential of smartwatches, and now they offer a compatible app for it, along with their regular smartphone application. Alarm.com is among the first who developed their smartwatch app, which has access to both the alarms and smart home solutions, like the Nest Learning Thermostat. It’s available for Apple Watch, and the app offers the same benefits, but with a completely revamped design. The more simplistic, button-based layout is easily readable even on a smaller screen, showcasing important details only. Hopefully, other major home security companies will catch the importance of smartwatches as well, and in the future this technology will be associated with home defense just like smartphones.
