Sometimes we break down. Then, we find comfort from our dearest pets and we rise from the ashes. That’s why, in times of need, we would do anything to make our furry friends healthy again. Pet insurance is certainly the best way to make sure that happens. Two of the companies in this field come to present their plans. PetFirst is one of them, with pretty decent coverage and annual limits on its plans. Then, there is Healthy Paws, with reasonable pricing and only one broad plan, however, a firm that does not offer wellness plans, like PetFirst does.

Founded in 2004, PetFirst has helped thousands of pet parents enroll to get coverage for their pets’ vet treatments. Without any age limits, PetFirst offers plans with yearly benefit limits that cover non-preexisting conditions including hereditary, congenital, and chronic ones. This firm has, however, no lifetime or per-incident caps.
Among the most popular plans offered by this company, there are the Cost Conscious plan, with a yearly benefit limit of $2,000, the Recommended one, with an annual benefit cap of $5,000, and the Additional Coverage plan, with a yearly benefit limit of $10,000. All three of these plans have a yearly deductible of $250 and an 80% reimbursement rate.
PetFirst also offers three different wellness plans that help pet parents recover a portion of the expenses incurred with preventive care for cats and dogs, such as vaccines, microchipping, routine exams, and so on.
The waiting periods with PetFirst are indeed more than reasonable for accidents (one day), and 14 days for non-preexisting illnesses. More complicated conditions like cruciate ligaments or disc disease have, though, a pretty long waiting period of 12 months.
Having been in business since 2009, Healthy Paws has reasonable prices and only one customizable plan with broad coverage that includes cancer and chronic conditions. Coverage is limited to animals who are between 8 weeks and 14 years old. Hereditary and congenital conditions are covered, as long as their symptoms and signs develop after enrollment and applicable waiting periods.
Unlike PetFirst, Healthy Paws has no annual, per-incident, or lifetime benefit limits. The monthly policy prices are influenced by the rates of the chosen deductibles – which range from $100 to $500 – and reimbursement, with a maximum reimbursement rate of 90%. This provider’s premiums do not increase based on the pet’s age, however, there can be increases in prices due to rising veterinary costs.
Healthy Paws does not provide any type of coverage for routine care and exam fees. The waiting period is 15 days for both accidents and illnesses. More complicated conditions like hip dysplasia have a 12-month waiting period.
PetFirst and Healthy Paws are two well-established pet insurance companies on the market. The first one offers customizable plans with no age limits, yearly benefit caps, and variable deductibles. This company covers most non-preexisting conditions, as well as exam fees and even provides three optional plans for routine care. Healthy Paws has no yearly benefit limits and only one customizable plan with deductibles ranging from $100 to $500. This pet insurance firm provides coverage for cancer and chronic illnesses, however, it does not cover routine care or exam fees. Now, it is up to you to decide which one better fits your and your four-legged pal’s needs.
