Kanban, which literally translates to billboard, is a concept designed by Toyota. In the late 1940s, they researched supermarkets in an attempt to use the shelf-stocking techniques of a super market in their factories. The researchers discovered that a supermarket gives the customer what they need, when they need it and in the amount they need. They also discovered that supermarkets only buy as much stock as they need. This led to the development of the first just-in-time production system, which later became Kanban.
