Interview with OpenDrive

OpenDrive is a longstanding online backup provider that provides you with the infrastructure and tools you need to efficiently enjoy access to a cloud workplace. You can store, backup and sync files with OpenDrive giving you the choice which data you want to have continuously synced in the cloud and available for sharing with co-workers, family or other users. With its strong set of business features, OpenDrive is also serving home users with a straightforward all-inclusive plan.

The completeness of this backup service is one of the reasons we rated the backup functionalities of this service with four stars, as is the storage of up to 99 file versions. OpenDrive recently unleashed WebDAV support as a new feature and is working on a slew of other neat new features. Reasons enough for us to interview the company’s support center manager Christina about the company and its service.

Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

OpenDrive is a cloud storage provider, and we have been providing cloud storage since 2008. We offer synchronization and backup features. We also offer account access from various platforms, including the web interface, drive applications (Windows & Mac), mobile applications (Android & iOS), API, and WebDAV.

Can you tell us a bit more about the WebDAV support in OpenDrive?

WebDAV, currently in beta, allows you to access files in your account in a similar way to how you would access local files. To access WebDAV, you can map a local drive to the WebDAV address or you can enter the address in a third party application that supports WebDAV access.

Which measures are in place to fully ensure that the customer’s privacy is respected?

We do not share customer information for any reason, and customers are only contacted for OpenDrive promotions and support purposes. For account security, accounts are secured with the password chosen by the user. The password is not accessible even by our staff, and when users login the information is transferred securely to our servers.

Which types of users does your backup service cater to the most?

We cater to both personal and business users. As you would find on our pricing page, we have a personal unlimited plan and a business unlimited plan. We also have a custom plan that can be set as personal or business, depending on the needs of the user.

While not having geo-redundant storage, how do you ensure that your customers’ data can’t be lost?

We have data mirrored between multiple servers, so if one of our servers is unavailable users can be redirected to another server where their files are available. We also have a continuous backup of data stored in accounts, and this can be used to restore data that has been removed or has become inaccessible.

Which restrictions apply to the unlimited storage in your Personal and Business Unlimited plans?

Our unlimited storage is truly unlimited. There are no space limitations for these plans, regardless of whether the data is backed up, synchronized, or transferred manually to the account. Also, there are no limitations for the number of computers or devices the data can be uploaded from.

Why should our readers choose OpenDrive and not another online backup provider?

Our primary goal is to meet and exceed our customer’s expectations. Our features are clearly stated on our pricing page and on other sections of our site, and we do not try to hide anything like many providers may. Many of our new and updated features are based on requests, so we encourage our customers to let us know if there is anything they would like to see changed or added.

Which new features, updates may we expect from OpenDrive in the near future?

While we cannot provide specific details until release, there are several updates and new features planned for the web interface and our applications. We also have plans for new applications to be added to the list of applications already available.
