Launched in Palo Alto in 2008, OpenDrive serves more than 20,000 businesses and over 1 million users across the globe. OpenDrive is an SAS 70 Type II certified cloud backup service that allows you to store, share, sync, advertise, sell or back up files from computers onto the Internet. Their top-of-the-line package is their unlimited storage plan, available in package for both personal and business usage. The desktop application can be set to back up files incrementally and automatically, either continuously or on schedule. It allows private collaboration between users via shared folders, public sharing via hotlinks and syncing with virtually any device. Not only are files protected with 128-bit encryption upon transferring to the server, and from then on, with 256-bit encryption, but you also own the encryption keys for your data. The company offers round-the-clock e-mail support, as well as phone support during office hours.

OpenDrive Web comes with a simple, user-friendly interface that gives you full access to your files without the need to install any software. File password protection, a URL shortener, image rotation, user management, 99-file-version limit, personalized Favicon and a customizable text on login are just some of the other features the browser version supports. OpenDrive supports virtually any type of file: documents, video and music files, pictures and many of the other file types both home and business users use. Using the web interface of your cloud backup account, you can create text files and spreadsheets and have them stored in your storage space.

The software lets you perform all basic file and folder actions like you can do through the explorer on your computer. The built-in picture browser that gives you a photo album viewing experience and a music player make handling these files a pleasant experience. If you have a lot of data to manage, the unique CSV export functionality will prove to be very useful to you.

OpenDrive is an online backup service built with businesses of all sizes in mind. Its Business Unlimited plans and Custom plans come with a complete and robust set of basic backup features complemented by user and IP management options, CSV exports for big data transfers and the option to stick your corporate brand on your online backup solution.

All incoming files are transferred via 128-bit encrypted SSL connection. Additionally, Premium Users receive an encryption folder with 256-bit and a personal encryption key. Files are therefore encrypted before even reaching OpenDrive, and only your computer can decrypt them. All data is constantly scanned by Comodo HackerGuardian software for malware, viruses and attacks. You can choose to receive automatically generated account activity reports so that any unauthorized access is exposed. Crucial folders and files can be granted restrictive access for further protection.

The network is continuously monitored for suspicious activity and there is a firewall to protect all servers. The company’s data centers are located in Silicon Valley with constant monitoring by on-site security teams. OpenDrive guarantees 100% uptime with refunds issued for any downtime period. The company welcomes HIPAA compliant organizations as it has the security measures to support their requirements.

Unlike most similar online backup services, OpenDrive does not have client applications as it integrates seamlessly with Windows Explorer or Finder on your Mac. Therefore, you don’t have default configurations or backup settings that you can adjust from the program. The Windows/Mac version links your user account to your private cloud and stores, syncs and shares files between as many devices, computers and users as needed. A virtual drive is created your computer, which syncs the data in the drive with OpenDrive’s cloud servers automatically and backs it up. Your data can then be accessed over the web version of the WebDAV interface, across multiple computers, devices and users. Premium users receive a folder with files that can only be encrypted and accessed by you.

Virtually every Mac and Windows powered computer, and any Android or iOS device supports the OpenDrive software. Files can be copied from OpenDrive to these computers easily, and Linux systems can also download the API. The company’s iOS app is iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad compatible, and the Android app requires the Android 2.1 or newer operating systems. Both app versions grant offline access as well.

Ease of use

Setting up a free account is an easy process – an email address and a username is all that is required to get started. Business accounts have a set of other features, which makes these specific accounts a tad more complicated to set up and manage. OpenDrive can be used over the web through the clean user interface, or via the downloadable application. Installation is easy and fast with the installation wizard.

To start the backup process, you simply go to your system’s main folder, browse through to the file or folder needing syncing or backing up and right-click on it. The options in the menu then allow you to either back up or sync the file/folder with OpenDrive. The next step is to select the destination folder of the backed-up file. A task manager will open showing the backup/sync progress allowing you to manage the process. Accidentally deleted files can easily be restored from your backup’s trash folder in a similar fashion as with your computer’s local trashcan. A zip file of its entire content can be downloaded and restored.

Pricing

OpenDrive practices transparent pricing policies and offers a free Basic Plan to be used at leisure for personal interests only, for life. It caters to personal and business users alike, with unlimited plans for both. It also provides a Custom Plan for those who prefer the features of either of these accounts, but who have specific storage, bandwidth and user access requirements. The plans come with monthly payment or with a discounted, yearly payment. You can pay for the backup service via PayPal, or Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express cards.

Personal unlimited plan

The popular Personal Unlimited plan comes with unlimited storage, file size and speed, auto syncing and backup, and is accessible across any device or computer for up to three users. Online tools, file versioning, file encryption, large bandwidth, redundant backup and user management are features that further complete this package.

Having one account user only mandates a $12.95 monthly payment, the lowest monthly price available, or a $129 one-off yearly payment (a whopping $26 discount for signing up to a yearly payment). Having 2 users on the account means a monthly payment of $22.90 is due, or a $229 one-off for the entire year (with a $46 discount). Opting for 3 users requires monthly payments of $32.85, or a yearly payment of $328, with $66 off.

Basic plan

With a Basic plan you can store up to 5GB of data, with file sizes up to 100MB transferred at a speed of 200KB/s. Computer access is unlimited and backups and syncs are automatic.

Business unlimited plan

Business Unlimited plan holders receive the same perks as the Personal Unlimited holders, but with added custom branding. The monthly payment for a single business user account is $29.95, with a yearly discount of $60 for those who opt for a $299 yearly payment instead. Having multiple users from two to ten draws an extra $4.95 per month, or $49 per year. This means paying the one-off yearly fee is the equivalent of only 10 months of monthly payments, saving you 2 months of access to the service. In other words, opting for the 2 user Business Unlimited Plan and making a yearly payment entitles the account holder to $70 discount. A further $10 discount is offered for each new user up to a maximum of 10.

Having 10 users involves a monthly payment of $74.5, or a yearly payment of $745. The yearly payment option is $149 cheaper overall than the monthly option. Each new user added from this point on up to a maximum of 19 attracts a further $10 discount for yearly payments. With 20 users, the account holder is required to pay $124 per month or $1240 per year; the total discount for this type of account is therefore $248 when the payment is processed yearly. The pricing table on OpenDrive’s website makes it easy to see what the monthly price per user is for your team.

Custom plan

Additionally, OpenDrive offers a Custom Plan option, so that users may select the type of plan they prefer, Personal or Business. This plan is not unlimited and the customer is able to select the desired amount of storage space, from 100GB to a maximum of 5TB. Bandwidth can range from 25GB to 1TB, and both Personal and Business account holders are granted up to 20 users. The minimum monthly fee for a customized Personal or Business plan with 100GB storage, 25GB bandwidth and 1 user is $5 per month. This entitles the user to the same online tools, file versioning, bandwidth, file encryption, redundant backup, user management and custom branding features as an Unlimited Plan customer. The same rule applies with 2 months off the price of the yearly payment for Custom Plan holders. The maximum monthly payment for a Business Account with TB storage, 1TB bandwidth and access for 20 users is $155. The yearly payment is $1,550, with a total discount of $310. This plan also entitles users to the perks Unlimited Business Plan holders receive, except unlimited storage and bandwidth.

Bottom line

With comprehensive backup features, reliable encryption, unlimited storage plans, multiple device compatibility and multiple account user ID’s, OpenDrive is up there with the quality online backup services. That being said, the fact that it can’t provide geo-redundancy leaves stored data vulnerable to manmade and natural disasters. However, the prices and plans are competitive and fit businesses of all types, the interface is user-friendly and accessible to anyone with an Internet connection, a computer or a mobile device, the plans can be customized to suit any individual or business and customer support is available round-the-clock.
