Interview with CloudBerry Lab

CloudBerry Lab is the company behind CloudBerry Backup, an online backup solution that has a different take on how cloud backups should work. CloudBerry Backup creates a backup of your device, ensures it’s fit to be restored using a backup consistency check, and lets you store it with a cloud storage solution of your choice through a secure connection. Currently only Windows computers work with the software, but the team is working on finalizing their Mac OSX client so you’ll be able to backup those devices using CloudBerry Backup as well. Later this year mobile applications will be released as well, and soon we will also get to use a new full disk image feature. Big updates for CloudBerry Backup are upon us, so we went out to interview the company’s Marketing Director to learn more about these novelties.

What is your role in the CloudBerry Lab team?

My name is Alexander Negrash, I’m Marketing Director at CloudBerry Lab.

Why should we backup our data using CloudBerry Backup?

If you seek to leverage the securest cloud storage such as Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and others to keep your backups protected and at an affordable price, then CloudBerry Backup is a solution for you to go. It is both easy to set up and to use. CloudBerry Backup compresses and encrypts backups with up to 256-bit strong keys on a user side, so all data leaves a computer already encrypted. Plus, with a new Backup Consistency Check feature, the solution protects you from corrupted backups, which means you will always be able to restore your data.

What makes using a third party provider for the cloud storage of backups a better option?

Having a choice is a nice and pleasant feeling. This is what we give our customers. They are in charge of deciding which cloud provider they want to trust their data and which pricing policy attracts them more. With an ability to choose a cloud storage provider, a user avoids being locked-in with a single vendor that can easily change its terms of storing data or raise the price for its service. If something from these happens, CloudBerry can help to relocate all backed up data to another storage that we support.

Moreover, having a single backup service, you usually pay twice more for the cloud space that you use. The backup scheme that CloudBerry suggests is more cost-efficient. Some cloud storage providers give their customers some storage space for free. For instance, Microsoft Partners get $100/month Azure credits, which is equal to almost 4TB storage. With CloudBerry Backup, you can leverage such perks. In other words, we see keeping a backup solution provider and a cloud storage provider separate is the best way to do a backup in all ways.

What can we expect from CloudBerry Backup for Mac OSX and Linux?

This is going to be the same technology with its benefits but for Mac OSX and Linux users. Our clients have been asking for it for a quite a while now and we are happy to finally bring them the opportunity to use CloudBerry solutions on all their operating systems.

Will there be mobile apps for CloudBerry Backup coming anytime soon?

By the end of the year, we will launch iPhone and Android clients. We are, as well as our customers, are really excited about it.

How does your backup consistency check feature work?

Backup Consistency Check helps users preemptively identify issues that can lead to failed data restores. Users can schedule regular consistency checks or run them manually. When the check is started it compares files in the local repository with files in the cloud. The user is alerted once a mismatch is found. Speaking about the issue itself, I can say that data can become corrupted during the backup process due to direct access to cloud storage, an internal issue with the cloud storage provider, or in the local backup scenario, users replacing the disk or Network Attached Storage device with another device missing actual backup files.

The challenge with backup consistency is that often, the issue is identified only after it’s too late: when users seek to recover lost or otherwise inaccessible files or data. To ensure seamless recovery, CloudBerry has made it easy to implement regular, proactive backup consistency checks. And, by the way, CloudBerry brings this feature set to small and medium-sized businesses that is typically only available in advanced enterprise data protection software.

What makes CloudBerry Backup a privacy-friendly solution?

CloudBerry Backup supports AES 256-bit strong encryption. Users set their password and the date got encrypted before it leaves the computer. Names of files and folders can be protected as well. Our customers own their encryption keys, so neither CloudBerry nor a cloud storage provider can access the data. If the key is lost, there is no way to restore a backup. We advise our customers to be very sensitive with their encryption keys. This is the only way to protect their privacy.

How does CloudBerry Backup make sure that the backed up data is compressed and optimized so it doesn’t take up too many resources?

We provide our users with a compression feature powered by gzip. That helps them to reduce data overhead, decrease storage costs, add bandwidth and accelerate backup completion.

Which new features can we expect in the near future?

We are about to release the technology that will allow our users to back up a full disk image and restore it to new hardware. It will also enable the users to create a bootable flash drive to initiate a restore directly from the cloud quickly and easily.

How do you personally use CloudBerry solutions?

I back up my laptop with CloudBerry Backup. It is extremely useful to use Amazon Glacier for archiving tons of family photos; I like it. I also use CloudBerry Box to exchange files with my colleagues. We all have Amazon accounts and it is the easiest way for us to keep all documents that we need for work in one place. Sometimes, I work from home and I travel quite a lot. With CloudBerry Box, I’m able to sync my PC at work and my laptop through my Amazon account, so wherever I am, I’m able to work with the most current versions of my docs.

What else should we certainly know about CloudBerry Backup?

CloudBerry Backup is a one-time fee product starting from $29.99 per license. The only ongoing expense is your storage cost that you pay directly to cloud storage provider of your choice. You can download your free 15-day trial to try our service yourself.

Thank you Alexander and the rest of the CloudBerry Lab team for doing this interview with us!
