With a home security system installed, you can relax knowing your home is well protected, but did you know that you can extend an alarm system to include home automation as well? Home automation gives you control over a vast range of household functions, using a tablet, smartphone or other device, making life simpler and safer. Just as many DIY alarm systems, these home automation systems can easily be installed in existing homes without needing any tools or other equipment to set it up.

Locks and entrances

Control the locks and entrances to your home remotely. No longer will you need to worry if you have locked your door – your locks can be activated simply at any time. You can even unlock your door remotely to let a visitor in when you are at work, for example to have a package delivered. Combined with surveillance cameras guarding your door or smart doorbells, you can truly open up your home more while securing it more at the same time.

Lighting

Internal and external lights can also be managed remotely. When you arrive home on a dark night, with your hands full of grocery bags, imagine the convenience of your path being lit up to your door, and your internal lights being activated as you enter. Lights can be set to switch on and off as you move through your home, so you are only using the lights you need – no more lights left on by mistake! You can even switch lights on and off when you are on vacation, helping give the impression you are at home for extra security. And you will certainly notice the difference in your energy bills by using your lights more effectively.

Thermostats

You can also make energy savings by managing your thermostat remotely. Timer systems are all very well, but not much use if you work irregular hours or something calls you home unexpectedly. A home automation system lets you adjust your thermostat wherever you are, making sure your home is always the perfect temperature, whatever is happening.

Appliances

Home automation can manage all your entertainment needs, by synchronizing your devices to give you what you need at any time. Stream your music tracks throughout your home so you won’t miss your favorite track if you have to leave the room, or watch TV in any room. Many home appliances can also be controlled with home automation. Switch the oven on for a perfectly cooked meal when you get home, control your coffee machine and microwave, and much more. Vivint for instance offers devices for small appliances which you simply need to place between the power outlet and the plug of your electronics to switch it on and off from a distance.

Alerts and video monitoring

Many systems will alert you to events such as the children arriving home from school or entertainment systems being accessed. For complete peace of mind, video monitoring lets you check on children, pets, or vulnerable relatives at any time, so you can always be sure exactly what is happening. You can tune in on and watch the action going on at points of interest in your home live as you wish, with recordings automatically starting from the moment there’s movement as well.
