GetSafe is a newly founded home security company based in California. The small team behind the service decided to create something truly unique for homeowners. They offer a competent starting package of stylish alarms and sensors that can be further tailored by adding video monitoring and home automation equipment, but there are two more things that differentiate GetSafe from the competition. First, most of their alarms have secondary features, like heat detection in the motion sensors that are also pet sensitive, or the door sensors that count how many times the item was being used, even when the alarm was disarmed. The second attractive trait of GetSafe alarms is the full smartphone compatibility. The separate app allows you to schedule or disarm your defenses, and receive constant feedback from the devices. This is coupled with the fact that GetSafe won’t lock you with overly long commitments. Finally, the 14-day trial period is the icing on the cake.

GetSafe security equipment was designed with a compact, yet stylish look in mind. The slick, uncomplicated white finishing reminds us of Apple products. The futuristic aesthetics hide a competent guard system, though. The nerve center of the GetSafe protection service is the Smart Hub. Despite its size and innocent look, the Smart Hub proficiently connects together the rest of your safety devices. It’s completely wireless, and houses a long-lasting rechargeable battery and AT&T 3G cellular sim card for the remote access. In case a sudden power outage happens, it still remains functional thanks to its battery system, and it switches to cellular mode after the Wi-Fi connection dies.

Beside the Smart Hub, GetSafe’s Starter Kit includes three essential alarm devices. The door & window alarms are fitted with built-in temperature sensors and a chime function, and operate via one AA Battery. They are functional even in a disarmed state, logging the use of the door/window they are attached to, which can be accessed from your phone later on. The motion detection alarm integrates the latest pet-detection technology, meaning that they can tell the difference between a smaller dog and a burglar. Also, the long-range vision allows it to cover any activity from 40 feet away, making it ideal to cover even the garden or the pool. Lastly, the starter kit presents a siren, which produces an 85db burst, lasting for 90 seconds. The siren is completely tamper proof, plus the device sends you a text notification when armed.

Additional protection

For those who wish to further expand their home security arsenal, GetSafe offers some additional equipment. These devices aren’t part of the starter kit, and need to be purchased separately. The motion detection camera has night vision, and only starts recording when detecting a non-pet intruder. The video feed can be watched right from your smartphone. As a countermeasure for environmental dangers, there are smoke and flood sensors available.

No home security system can be complete without a team of skilled individuals keeping a close watch on your alarm’s state. GetSafe provides homeowners a USA-based monitoring service that operates all day and night, even on holidays. The two monitoring centers are located in Ogden Utah and Rexburg Idaho, and both of them received the CSAA Five Diamond Certification. The staff is always on their toes to help, offer help by notifying the fire or police department while you look after your family. Rather uniquely, GetSafe also gives you the choice of fully monitoring your alarm system on your own. For a smaller monitoring fee, you are able to choose self-monitoring, where you rely on your smartphone when checking the alarm status.

Smartphone support

Your mobile device plays a vital role to stay in touch with your home security system. Your Smart Hub maintains constant connection with the other devices, and when one of them is tripped, the Hub sends you a text notification. There is also an independent application that is able to manually switch between security modes. The logs created by the door sensors also appear in the app’s history section. In case you purchased GetSafe’s motion sensor camera, the video feed is also forwarded to your phone. And one last thing to make your life easier: utilize Smart Rules to automate your home defense system. From your smartphone you are able to initiate custom schedules. For example, you can order the system to automatically arm/disarm itself at a certain point of time, or set the camera to record a short clip every time the door opens.

Home automation

GetSafe is bent on not only protecting your home, but also making it smart. The process starts with the Smart Hub, which is capable of identifying the Nest Smart Thermostat, and the scheduled arming of the defense system via the Smart Rules. Then there is the key fob, which is sold separately. It’s a small device that easily fits in the palm of your hand, and is capable of switching back and forth between four security modes (fully armed, fully disarmed, daytime and night time protection). The fob doubles as a panic alarm: pushing two specific buttons will immediately sound the sirens. But the home automation solutions don’t stop there. GetSafe has a strong focus on energy-efficiency. With their versatile list of Z-Wave products, all homes can be managed wirelessly, thanks to the multicolored light bulbs, smart dimers and special switches. The system can be easily connected to the Smart Hub through an adapter, which means that your lights can be turned on/off and scheduled remotely from your smartphone.

Pricing

GetSafe prides itself in the fact that their service doesn’t require any sort of long-term commitment. They work with a month-by-month monitoring fee, which can be cancelled anytime without losing any pre-paid money. On the other hand, the lack of long-term commitment also means that the monthly charges are fixed, and customers won’t get a discount by subscribing for lengthier periods. Depending on your needs, you can roll either with the Professional Monitoring or Self-Monitoring plans. Both of them offer access to the GetSafe app and the cloud servers for video storage, but the latter lacks the monitoring service provided by skilled GetSafe agents. Professional Monitoring charges you $29 per month, while refusing it means that you still need to get the Self-Monitoring service, but it is only $19 per month. You can try GetSafe for up to two weeks free of charge through their free trial that lets you receive a full refund when you’ve returned your equipment, which needs to be done at your own expense though.

GetSafe package pricing

Contrary to many home security companies, GetSafe is upfront and transparent about its pricing. You can compose your customized home security package and check the price of your pack as you assemble it on the website. After answering five questions you can also request a free quote. GetSafe doesn’t charge an activation or setup fee, which it shouldn’t anyway since it’s a DIY system. There isn’t an additional shipping cost either: everything comes with free delivery.

The company also likes to keep its payment strategy nice and simple. The meat and bone of the home security service is a package called “Starter Kit” . It includes the Smart Hub, an entry sensor, a motion detector, a siren, two window stickers and some accessories for the alarms. It costs a one-time $249. It’s necessary to mention that all GetSafe equipment comes with a one-year warranty, and during this period the company replaces any broken device. The Starter Kit can be augmented by adding some extra safety products. You can increase the number of motion detectors ($47 for each), the door sensors ($34 per piece), or have an additional siren for $48. As for the items not included in the kit, the wireless motion camera costs $129, the intelligent Nest Thermostat comes for $249, while they ask $32 for each key fob you order. The necessary adapter for the automated lighting system costs $65, while the available light bulbs come for $16. As for the environmental detectors; the flood detector has a price tag of $39, while they ask $88 for the smoke detector.

GetSafe’s website is transparent and concise about the specifics and capabilities of their devices and services. Their FAQ answers many lingering questions you may still have after touring the site, like the one about the warranty and the refund policy. They also have plenty of tutorial videos explaining the setup and smartphone management. They’re easily reachable for further questions through a number of channels, besides over the phone, one of which is their live chat. Though their monitoring station works 24/7, you won’t be able to chat with a sales rep via live chat or over the phone at any time of the day. When there isn’t someone manning the live chat, you can use the same chat form to submit an inquiry. In addition, GetSafe shows good response times on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

Bottom line

We were highly impressed with GetSafe. The company utilizes easy-to-deploy alarms in the name of DIY, but the humble starting package does need some customization. The base station and the alarm units not only sport a clean and elegant design, but they can serve multiple purposes. The door sensor logs the use even when disarmed, while the motion sensor has a temperature sensor built inside it. All GetSafe alarms have a constant connection with the smartphone app, sending instant notifications when something happens, and they are also 100% tamper proof. The professional monitoring service isn’t mandatory, and you won’t find overly long contracts. The smartphone app is also in charge when it comes to managing your intelligent lighting system, or connecting the Nest Smart Thermostat and other smart home devices. GetSafe is by far one of the most transparent and upfront home security companies, with a concise website and good customer support.
