If there’s something that never goes out of fashion it’s email, but with the advance of technology, it’s no longer enough to simply send and receive emails. We also need ways to filter our overflowing inbox, a calendar for our busy schedules, a handy task manager, and other productive tools to save us precious time. Moreover, privacy and security have become a considerable concern to internet users lately, which means that email clients need to step up their game and start offering encryption tools so that the only people reading your messages are you and the recipient. eM Client knows this and, since 2007, has been upgrading its services to answer its users’ needs. Making eM Client an excellent product that not only will increase your productivity but secure your emails too. Best of all, it does it all free of charge.
eM Client is more than just an email client. With all the features it provides, you’ll be able to manage all your personal and professional tasks, direct message your friends, and more. When it comes to email management, there’s not much more you could ask for. Not only does eM Client give you an unlimited amount of email accounts associated with the application, but it also provides you with some neat features to make sure you don’t lose yourself under a pile of emails such as a smart filter, thorough email rules, and folders to store your emails.
More than that, eM Client also helps save time while writing emails. It also offers a spellchecker to make sure you don’t send that important email with any glaring errors. Users can also create email templates, so you don’t need to write the same thing over and over again, as well as offering signature creation. On top of that, eM Client throws an email scheduler into the mix to make sure your emails are sent at the right time.
However, eM Client shines the most when it comes to organization and productivity. eM Client comes with a taskbar where you can create your to-do list which you’re able to customize by adding the level of importance and due date. There’s also an integrated chat that lets you speak with anyone from Google Talk, Jabber or any other XMPP-based server. Nevertheless, there is a time where we need to concentrate on the task at hand and, fortunately, eM Client lets you snooze your inbox anytime you want.
Having essentially three apps in one is great, but we also need to take into account the amount of privacy and security an email client provides. When it comes to security, eM Client filters spam and comes with anti-phishing protection. Moreover, it will only show images from an email when you give permission or whitelist the sender.
Still, the problem doesn’t end just by making sure you’re not clicking on dodgy links that will steal your information. Email, at its core, isn’t safe. From when it leaves your account to when it arrives at its destination, your messages travel through various servers and most of the time, your data isn’t even encrypted. This means that a hacker who intercepts the communication will be able to read everything. Companies too, such as ISPs and email providers, are also able to store your data along the way. To solve this, you need to add encryption to your emails. eM Client uses TLS/SSL by default, protecting you from man-in-the-middle attacks, but that’s still not enough since the email provider will still be able to read your email. Fortunately, eM Client goes even further and also lets you configure S/MIME and PGP end-to-end encryption certificates in an easy way.
eM Client is only available for desktop, meaning that you’ll need to use another email client on your mobile, which isn’t ideal. Nevertheless, due to the number of features and simple interface, you may still want to use it on your Windows or Mac.
Overall, the eM Client interface is clean and straightforward, perfect for both the tech-savvy and for novices. On the left, you’ll find a sidebar where you can scroll between mail, calendar, tasks, and contacts tab. It has an excellent organization throughout the four tabs: everything is straightforward and won’t take much time to understand how it works. This is surprising when we take into account the amount of customization the email client provides. On the other side of the screen, you’ll find another sidebar showing the history of messages, attachments, tasks, and appointments of your selected contact. Although they are disabled by default, you can also add a tab for invitations and live chat.
Due to this organization, everything you need is just a few clicks away without flooding you with a massive amount of information. Though certain features that you may only use occasionally are more hidden and can only be accessed through the menu on the top side of the program’s window.
eM Client offers both a free and a paid plan and although the free plan comes with all the features discussed so far, there are some perks for going pro. First of all, you need to upgrade your plan to use eM Client commercially. More importantly, you’ll be able to have unlimited accounts associated with your license; the free license only gives you two accounts. On top of that, you’ll get premium customer support, unrestricted translation of incoming emails, and access to the license manager as well.
There’s a pro license available through the lifetime subscription that costs $49.95 but you can only use it on one computer. However, you will have to pay if you want future versions, unless you also get the lifetime upgrades, which increases the price to $99.95. Nevertheless, the more licenses you buy, the less each unit costs. For example, ten licenses with lifetime upgrades cost $411.95, which is, roughly, $41.20 per device — a 50% discount per unit.
There’s a decent variety of payment methods available, such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, wire transfer, and PayPal.
The customer service experience depends on if you are a free or a pro user. Nevertheless, eM Client offers various channels to find answers to your queries, even as a free user. The FAQ section is always an excellent place to start when facing an issue. Although it lacks a search bar to help us find our questions faster, it is still very well organized and covers a vast array of subjects. If the FAQs are not enough, the next step is to visit eM Client’s community forum, where we were able to find everything we needed, but there is always the option to send a query and wait just a couple of hours to get an answer.
For the times you really need to speak with the customer service, you have the option of Twitter where the company answers users’ tweets, Facebook where you can contact through messenger, or through the good, old email. We tried the latter, and we got our thorough and polite reply within 24 hours.
As a pro user, besides the above channels, you also have access to the enterprise online support center that not only ensures quick responses but offers remote assistance from eM Client’s support engineers as well.
Although eM Client comes with some limitations, like not having a mobile app or a license working only with one device, it’s a well-rounded email client. It not only offers impressive email management features, but it also lets you organize your task list and calendar. On top of that, it provides the possibility to easily configure S/MIME and PGP certificates, which is great if you worry about email security. It’s even more surprising when you take into account that you can get all of this for free. Although the free plan only lets you have two accounts, but, for personal use, we believe that’s enough. In short, eM Client is definitely worth checking out.

I bought the pro version and love this program!
Running on Windows 10 Pro.
Not one issue or problem.
Imported everything from windows Live Mail and I mean everything!
Data–settings–folders–everything.
Then I was ready to go. So easy I should have done this years ago.
This product is smooth and sweet!
I worked as an IT professional for nearly 50 years. Microsoft Office were the default programs along with Outlook. I used IMAP email programs regularly because the domain names were integral to the company business and because they synced automatically between devices. But now, IMAP is sort of dead with the current version of the Outlook email client in Microsoft 365. For decades, I would set up IMAP email accounts in Outlook but not that doesn’t work. If you want to access an IMAP email account in Outlook, you MUST join the domain name to your Microsoft account and your email address gets modified to a subdomain name. You lose all the simplicity of using your domain name. Yuck. Plus it takes hours of hassle to move your domain inside of Microsoft’s servers. At this point, Microsoft 365 Outlook is the ONLY place where IMAP email accounts don’t work. This, after 50 yeas of relably using IMAP email in Outlook.
eM Client works perfect. It is effortless and straightforward. I hope they make a mobile client soon..
I’ve been using EMclient 7 happily for many years. I recently upgraded to version 8, and it it giving me all sorts of problems now. The programme freezes regularly, comes up with error messages that the programme can’t be opened while it is already open. And most annoyingly: if I have a window composition open in EMClient but want to switch to another programme at that time via the “Show desktop” button, nothing happens. EMclient freezes and I can’t get the desktop view. Have to force an EMclient close.
EMclient initially responded to my reporting of these errors but no useful tips. And now they’ve completely stopped responding.
Note that in version 7 all EMclient windows would automatically close when you closed the main EMClient window. In version 8 they have changed that and individual windows (like a window for a specific message) stay open even if you close the main EMclient window. I think that is the cause for many of my problems. I don’t see the logic of that change.
Wish I had never upgraded, but downgrading difficult since database not backward compatible.
I am using Windows 7.
Hello Joss,
We’re sorry to hear you’re facing problems with eM Client. We tried to recreate your freezing issue, but everything worked as it should. You can always try to make a clean install and see if that fixes the error. But, don’t forget to back up your database first.
Indeed, eM Client doesn’t close all windows when you close eM Client through the ‘X’ button. Since the software minimizes to the Windows taskbar, it’s still working in the background. You have two options: wait for eM Client to release an update that changes this again or install version 7. If you backed up your database before installing eM Client version 8, you could continue using version 7. You can download it from the company’s download page, where you’ll find such an option below the green download button.
Considering that the customer support stopped replying, have you tried the company’s forums? Since you’ll get answers from other users, you might find someone who was able to fix a similar error.
We wish you the best of luck in solving the issue.
I changed to em client 8. because of reviews online. I was using windows Live Mail and was very happy, unfortunately Microsoft discontinued it. Since I changed, I have had nothing but trouble. It did not import all my folders, it continually freezes, it will not move mail to folders. I have to close and reopen the app several times a day to review email. Am I the only one?
Hello Michael,
We’re sorry to hear that you’re facing issues with eM Client. We didn’t have the same problem, but we found some users complaining about the same thing. Most of them were able to fix this by reinstalling the software. Make sure you enabled POP under the ‘sync email’ tab on Outlook settings and then do a clean install of eM Client.
The software usually sets everything up automatically, but you can also do it manually. You’ll notice that you have all the necessary POP, IMAP, and SMTP information on Outlook’s ‘sync email’ tab to sync your email with other platforms. So, confirm that eM Client has filled all the data correctly. If not, insert all information manually.
Hopefully, this will be enough for eM Client to work correctly. If the fix doesn’t work, please come back to us, and we’ll try to find another way to solve it for you. Have a nice day!
I tried emClient in my search for something that would handle spam better than Outlook. Thunderbird had always been my favorite email client, but the THunderbird installation on my machine got corrupted such that I could no longer properly delete email messages and folders, so I switched to Outlook. The problem with Outlook is that it doesn’t really do anything to prevent Spam. Yes, you can mark each individual message as spam and block the sender, but that is a process you’ll spend about ten to fifteen minutes doing every day!
I installed emClient and got the free license, thinking I’d upgrade once my pro trial period expired, but here I am a day later uninstalling it and trying MailBird. The problem with emClient is that it gets into this state where it won’t display your email messages. It just runs a yellow warning bar across the top of the screen, looking like it’s loading… forever. I did leave it running and went to bed, and sometime overnight it finally loaded the message. I wanted to review its message handling rules and spam rejection features, but unfortunately I didn’t get that far.
I don’t launch my email client to watch “loading” animations. I launch it to read my email and get back to work. Unfortunately emClient is not capable of letting me just read my messages, so out it goes.
Hello Phillip! Thank you for your comment. We’re sorry to hear that you’re having issues with eM Client. Indeed, the app sometimes has trouble loading all the emails when installing it for the first time. This can be for a variety of reasons:
– If you have an inbox with thousands of saved emails, it will take a long time to load them. This isn’t only for eM Client, though. Most email services take a while to load a countless number of emails. For example, if you don’t open Outlook for a while and come back to an inbox with thousands of new emails to read, the email service will take a few hours to update.
– The POP or IMAP settings might not be configured as they should. Although eM Client does configure everything automatically, there have been times we noticed the software didn’t set up everything properly. That’s why we recommend setting it up manually.
– If you’re using a Gmail account, then the problem might be related to Google itself. In order to use eM Client with a Gmail account, you’ll have to go to your Google settings and enable the ‘Less secure apps’ option.
– In case none of these troubleshoots works, then your best bet is to do a clean install of eM Client.
We hope we were able to help you and that you give a second chance to eM Client, as it offers excellent features for both convenience and security.
I recently moved all my email from Outlook to Gmail recently since I am vested in Google’s ecosystem. As of today Outlook clients cannot fully integrate into Google Calendar I had to find another option. I have been trying all the Windows based email clients now for months. Mailspring, Thunderbird, Mailbird, and Em Client. It’s really been a toss up between Thunderbird and em Client. It’s only for non-business, personal use, so I didn’t want nor have to pay for a solution.
Since yesterday Thunderbird has had a new problem where I cannot send emails I have drafted. While I did everything I could to troubleshoot it I had hoped Thunderbird would have fixed it, but it still remains. Thunderbird also requires Add-ons to fully integrate into Google Calendar where Em Client works right out of the box.
I am very pleased to use Em Client as my Windows 10 email client for Gmail. It does everything I need it to do, seamlessly, and I appreciate Em Client’s generous free personal use license.
Thanks for giving us your review Matthew! We’re glad to hear you’re having such a great experience with eM Client.
Hi, all. Good system, I have 3 pro lifetime licenses.
Today, when I tried to sign on to my account, they say it has expired.
Sent me to a link asking for $32 Australian for one year of VIP support.
I rarely need support but i had the clear impression, my pro licenses included support.
And I have had support, or they accepted serious bug reports and eventually fixed them.
This support charge “Gotcha” does not seem to be stated on their website, and so,
Asking for this money now, probably contravenes Australian Consumer Law.
Just letting you know, life time pro license will cost you extra for support, as it appears
to apply for a limited time only. Happy to be corrected.
Hello Colin, and thanks for your feedback! Indeed, you need to pay an annual subscription to get VIP support. This is stated on eM Client’s pricing page – getting a Pro Lifetime account gets you one year of VIP support and, after that, you either use the company’s Community Support or pay for a one-year VIP support extension. Unfortunately, there’s nothing else that you can do. Even so, we hope you continue enjoying eM Client’s great features!
I’ve had some of the same problems reported above – long load times, flaky data handling. The most annoying one is when I try to attach a file to a message and it crashes EmClient. Then to get back in, it has to rebuild the database, which takes anywhere from 10 minutes to half an hour. That’s a pretty annoying monkey wrench to throw into the several client conversations I usually have going via email. I’ve reported this several times and upgraded twice (now on v8), but no help other than “reinstall”, which is Supportese for “go away and don’t bother me”. Looking for an alternative!
Hello Darryl, and thank you for your comment. We’re sorry to hear about your experience with eM Client. Our recommendation would be to speak with customer support. However, since you already did that and weren’t happy with the support you got, it might be best to try out other options. For a secure email service, we recommend ProtonMail and Private-Mail. Have a nice day!
