Building a Home Security Camera Using Raspberry Pi

Building a Home Security Camera Using Raspberry Pi

By Tamás Ő.Tamás Ő. Verified by Sander D.Sander D. Last updated: July 23, 2024 (0)

Home security cameras are a controversial topic. On one hand, it’s clear as day that a camera not only provides valuable footage, but also serves as a great deterrent. On the other hand, setting up a network of HD cameras inside and outside the home and hooking it up to your security system is expensive as hell. That’s why budget conscious home owners either opt for cleverly set-up hidden cameras or resort to dummy cameras, which both have their pros and cons. But there is a third option for tech-savvy residents: building your very own camera system with the help of Raspberry Pi.

The multifaceted Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer, about the size of a credit card. Initially meant as an education tool to teach kids the craft of programming, it quickly became the fad among adults to build crazy devices. With the right kits, you can turn it into your very own printer system, Minecraft server, TV background light, talking plush toy, intelligent robot, e-health platform or even home security system. That’s right; you can even build a home security system with a camera from it.

Building your own security camera

Even though the setup is well fleshed-out in this tutorial, we recommend it only to those who are at least a bit familiar with Raspberry Pi or tinkering with hardware in general. First of all, you need a Raspberry Pi motherboard, this is a given. Then connect a R. Pi camera or a USB camera, since the board has a USB port built into it. You should also get a Micro SD card to store the live footage, a power supply, and an Ethernet cable. Raspberry Pi is capable of handling Wi-Fi connections as well, so the LAN cable isn’t mandatory if a router connection is available. There is a good reason behind the need for internet access: put together the parts correctly, and the device will stream live video footage to your browser. In this sense, the Raspberry Pi camera doesn’t differ much from a high-class camera sold by home alarm companies.

The biggest advantage of Raspberry Pi is that you don’t need to spend a fortune on the required hardware. Even better, there are additional kits available specifically for monitoring purposes, with features equaling professional cameras. For example, take a look at the Waveshare Raspberry Pi Camera that offers a night vision module, and comes with two built-in infrared LED lights. In case you are a fan of home automation, you’ll definitely like the SPI-BOX Raspberry Pi 3 PIR Motion Activated Security Camera kit. It detects any movement in a 7 meter radius, and activates the connected camera. And if you are a somewhat of a programmer, then you can order the system to send the snapshot right to your email account. Now that’s home-built convenience and security for you!
