Having a clever and unique CV is the best way to catch the recruiter’s attention, even if you don’t have any prior experience in this field yet.
Making it a convincing presentation of yourself and your motivations is your best weapon in making a lasting impression that will land you a job interview for the position.
In order to get hired, you not only need a good resume, but a platform where you can advertize your services too. Therefore, you should register with as many sites as possible where accountants can look for jobs and employers can discover you. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is a good start, but you can also try out freelancer websites and, once get your certification, at the certified accountants’ list of certain accounting solutions like Xero, FreshBooks or QuickBooks Online.
Furthermore, certain resume builders are capable of storing your resume in a nice-looking online format, which is not only more convenient (for both applicants and employers), but also shows that you are tech-savvy and environmentally aware. LinkedIn is also a good way to broaden your list of connections and advertize your accounting services, but since it is not a resume platform (and neither are freelancer sites), you still need to share your resume when you are asked to do so or, more importantly, when you are guaranteed that the person/company behind the job post is trustworthy.
The most important thing is that you shouldn’t include anything that is not related to accounting, but instead focus on your achievements. You should target your resume by telling which role you want to fill and why you are the best choice for said role: in other words, emphasize that you are specialized in one field and then underline that specialization with the above mentioned achievements. These achievements must include your certifications (including accounting software, college and university certificates) and membership status, the software you can handle (from online accounting solutions to Excel) and the experience and skills you acquired with other employers.
The latter is extremely important (and could land you the job instantly) because of two things: the first is that it can be a good base of a cover letter. You can search for much sought after key words that recruiters may be looking for when going through resumes, and you can make use of the suggested pre-written phrases certain online resume builders like LiveCareer suggest as you write your resume. The second is that you can apply a unique method to show how valuable you are: quantifying. Basically quantifying is telling the future employer your achievements in numbers, such as the size of the budgets and investments you managed, the net worth of the company you worked for, the amount of contracts and, most importantly, how much you have saved or earned as an accountant.
