Why should you trust us?

The Best Reviews team tests all products first-hand and relies on first-hand research. We've been reviewing products and services since 2012 and only publish human-created content.

Canada-based VisualCV, which was founded back in 2007, is another proof that older sites are not by all means bad. Quite the contrary: the Force is still strong with this online resume builder and we have a dozen reasons why we think this way. If you become a subscriber of this company, you can get access to software that has a fantastic visitors’ chart, many templates and other design elements and an interface that is a pleasure to use. As a special surprise from VisualCV, you are able to access your account from any mobile device without limitations and you can use its services without paying a single dime. However, you can unblock the true powers of this software like unlimited resumes and downloading to Google Docs by choosing two of the available subscriptions. And if we mention the exceptional extra support, the possibility of including media files in your CVs, the many sharing options, we wouldn’t be surprised if you might be thinking: why am I not subscribed to VisualCV yet…

Signing in to your account, you are not directed to your resumes, but a chart that displays the number of people who have seen and/or downloaded your resumes. This chart only displays data if you share the link directing to your resumes via social media or email; therefore you must create as many resumes as possible.

However, keep in mind that the number of resumes, created on a separate page and represented by tiles similar those of the latest Windows operating systems, depends on your subscription. If you are using the software for free you can only create 2 resumes, but if you are a paid subscriber, you can create as many resumes as possible. The same is true for uploading files: it is limited to 50 for free users and unlimited for paid subscribers. Speaking of files: VisualCV allows users to not only add links to their CVs, but other files and even YouTube videos as well – which becomes especially handy if your resume is not in printed format. Because, unfortunately, you cannot directly print your CVs from this software; however, you can download it in PDF of even to Google Docs and print your resume therefrom. Too bad the Google Docs option, which even allows you to edit your CVs, is only available for paid subscribers.

There are two things, however, which are limited for both free and subscribed users. The first limitation is the bigger problem: cover letters. Although the site recommends you to choose a blank resume with any template you want and only add the text section thereto, we still have to say that cover letters are out of the game. The other limitation is you can only create one online CV; therefore you have to decide in advance which resume should be the lucky one.

Creating a resume is extremely easy with VisualCV as you are not only allowed to draft a completely new CV, but you can copy or import existing ones as well. Furthermore, if you chose to create a totally new resume you can still import the content of existing ones or even that of sample resumes later no matter whether you started filling out the 10 sections or not.

Customization of the sections is also easy as pie: you can edit, rearrange, and add sections either in the document itself or by clicking on Sort. Although no pre-written phrases are available, you can add bold, underlined, italicized words, bullet lists, links, and even tables to each section, plus in the Portfolio section you can include YouTube videos, and any files you upload to your account.

What could make things better? You can access your account from a mobile device without limitations.

VisualCV offers its customers 14 different templates and only one of them lacks the option to include a photo of yourself. However, keep in mind the following: free users can only use 3 templates and there are 4 templates which cannot be downloaded in PDF, only shared. And interestingly templates are called designs for some reason.

Aside from the customization of the sections, there are the settings, where you can also change the color of the paragraph titles, the size of the fonts, and the margin of sections and paragraphs. Sadly the type of the font you are using cannot be changed in VisualCV as it depends on the chosen template; so unless you are a subscriber of VisualCV Professional and you can download your documents to Google Docs, the fonts will remain the way they are.

Pricing

We don’t know why resume builder companies think that hiding their pricing plans is a client-friendly act, but apparently this is the newest trend. And sadly VisualCV is not an exception. Albeit, there is one thing that redeems the company: you can use the software for free with some limitations regarding templates, download options, the number of resumes and files, and the visitors’ chart. In order to fully access all features of the resume builder, however, you have to subscribe to one of the pricing plans.

You can pay an $18 monthly subscription fee with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and PayPal; too bad you can only learn the existence of this pricing plan if you visit the FAQ. There is a good reason behind this: there is a 3-month subscription which is just $12 per month; but using PayPal instead of credit cards, your $36 will buy you a 6-month subscription saving you 66%. But no matter which subscription you choose, you can cancel your account any time taking effect at the end of the current billing term. Moreover, if you do this within 30 days from your subscription, you are entitled to a full refund.

Even though you cannot ask for help via telephone and live chat assistance, you can still send the company an email or leave a message via its contact module and you can be sure that you receive a professional answer within 1 business day. Furthermore, VisualCV is very active on social media, so if you prefer this contact method, you can ask the company via Facebook and Twitter.

However, it is the extra support options where VisualCV truly shines: you can read useful articles via a blog, get a list of the best job search engines, pick one of the many how-to pages, access cover letter and resume samplescompare CVs with resumes, and go through the FAQ. And if you need help in writing resumes or operating the software, you can read the resume guide or download a free, 54-page long eBook, and turn to the knowledge base.

Bottom line

Unlike many online resume builders we have encountered, VisualCV is a company that definitely deserved our attention. In fact, it was a very pleasant surprise. Too bad it is not perfect though: the pricing plans are hidden from the public eye, you cannot create cover letters – regardless of what the company says. There are many options that are limited, especially in the free version, like downloading, the number of resumes, files and templates.

However, all these problems are outshined by the countless advantages of VisualCV, like a free of charge plan, many design elements, the visitors’ chart, and the possibility to include media files in your resumes. Moreover, you can import your documents, share them in many ways, get access to superb extra support and access your account via the perfect mobile version, proving that VisualCV is an ideal choice you should give a try.
