Why Would You Use a VPN to Play Mobile Legends?

Why Would You Use a VPN to Play Mobile Legends?

Virtual private networks and gaming have an on-again, off-again relationship. It’s true that in some cases VPNs can help in reducing large bandwidth throttling to a manageable amount, not to mention the freedom to choose any country’s server by donning a foreign IP can be appreciated. But on the other hand, deploying a VPN is more often than not banned by companies, especially when used with online multiplayer games because winning or losing has more substantial consequences here. Interestingly though, loopholes in the software can sometimes appear that allow rampant cheating and game breaking lag as players exploit VPN technology to farm easy wins. Moonton, the Chinese company behind the League of Legends clone Mobile Legends, is one such example.

VPN affecting winning chance in mobile legends

So how does masking your IP via a VPN contribute to increased success in Mobile Legends? The issue was highlighted by Indian players who were constantly encountering unusually high lag spikes that ultimately lead to the demise of their characters. The game itself is mostly popular in Asian countries and it quickly turned out that Indonesian players were behind this strange occurrence. They were using VPNs to access Indian servers, which resulted in this high amount of lag that paralyzed their opponents with the power of cross-continent server latency. This underhanded tactic – which is well documented – hasn’t happened by accident as you’ll find plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube explaining how to cheat your way to the top by using a VPN. There are even free VPNs on the app stores dedicated to providing a free proxy just for unrestricted gaming.

Controversy after controversy

‘Shouldn’t Moonton be doing something about this?’ you may ask. Well, the company has bigger issues at hand, as Riot Games – the studio behind the insanely popular League of Legends – sued numerous copycat companies for infringing on LoL’s copyright. Moonton lost the case in July 2018 and it was forced to pay $1.9 million as compensation, this blow to their finances probably hinders the company’s efforts in banning players. Interestingly, Mobile Legends isn’t the only multiplayer game that suffers backlash for allowing gamers to use VPN and play on foreign servers. PUBG ran into the same problem when Chinese players ditched the unstable local servers in favor of the higher quality U.S. ones, which created animosity between the two groups as the high latency gave an unfair advantage to Chinese players.

Features to look for in a gaming VPN

Sometimes you need to fight fire with fire. Even though we don’t condone using a VPN to gain the upper hand over other players in a nefarious way, it’s hard to deny that activating such a service is helpful sometimes. Take StrongVPN as an example: it’s a great solution if you wish to play Mobile Legends undisturbed. The company promises lightning fast speed and protection against lag or ISPs throttling a connection. Since the game is only available on smartphones, it’s also good to know that StrongVPN provides an app for Android and iOS systems respectively. The encryption system was designed to effortlessly bypass gaming-related restrictions such as region blocks. Such high-level protection against malware and third-party tracking is only provided by paid services like StrongVPN because free apps only have a proxy that changes the IP but doesn’t encrypt the data stream.
