Mexican drug and crime leader Joaquín “El Chapo”Guzmán was already in the spotlight thanks to his infamous life, but now the ex-head of the Sinaloa Cartel will get even more attention due to his extraction to the United States on January 19th, 2017. Having lived in crime his whole life, El Chapo now faces 17 charges including drug trafficking, murder, money laundering, kidnapping and much more. El Chapo pleaded not guilty, did not ask for any bail and there’s still no date when the trial will begin.
So what better time for Netflix to announce the release of a new series, El Chapo, based on the life of the man who once was the king of drug trafficking?
After the immediate success of Narcos, the series that recounts the life of Pablo Escobar, another infamous drug lord, it was a logical step from Netflixto create a series based on El Chapo as well. This time, however, the company produces and develops the new series in cooperation with Univision’s Story House (owned by Fusion Media Group).
You might be wondering why Netflix doesn’t handle the series itself like in the case of Narcos. Camila Jiménez Villa, president and chief content officer at Fusion Media Group, said it not only makes sense, but it can result in one of the finest productions of recent years, since it will combine the world-class reporting and insights of Univision News’ investigative team with an outstanding team of talented storytellers and producers of Netflix. In fact, El Chapo’s may take the whole drug cartel concept show to a whole other level, featuring the best of both fictional script and documented reality worlds.
However, at the moment there is not much known about the series as neither Univision nor Netflix released details about the script or the cast.
Despite the shortage of further information, the world is anxiously waiting for the release of the new series. And since people feel attracted to this kind of criminal series, especially after Narcos had largely contributed to the growing amount of Netflix subscriptions, the success is guaranteed. However, there are two little important things we already know and might be bad news for some. First, the show is expected to premiere on Univision in April 2017, while Netflix subscribers can only watch it later. But most importantly, despite being promised to be released worldwide by Netflix, there will be people left out due to geo-blocks.
To avoid this unfortunate situation, it’s better to invest in a VPN to circumvent geo-blocks so you can watch El Chapo too even if your country isn’t on Netflix’s list. With a fully-functional VPN service that connects you to the best servers placed in key parts of the world without limitations, and an international Netflix subscription (a U.S. one preferably), you can easily get rid of the annoying geo-blocks. Furthermore, you’ll be able to “infiltrate ” El Chapo’s cartel in the stealthiest way possible as ISPs won’t be able to throttle your internet speed either.
