The birth of a child is a spectacular moment in any family’s life, a moment that deserves to be eternalized in a photo. This is typically followed by a bunch of other photos of the baby: sitting up for the first time, celebrating Christmas, meeting granny and grandpa, taking the first steps… the list could go on.
And usually these photos end up in a customized photo book, able to bring joy to anyone who receives it, whether that be friends, colleagues, relatives or even the parents themselves. But, sadly, these photo books are too delicate to be handed to the baby…
At least, until now. These books weren’t baby-proof in the past: meet soft photo books, the album intended for toddlers and babies.
If you have seen a book made out of cloth that features colorful pictures, then you already have an idea about what a soft photo book is. However, unlike its traditional counterpart where there are many options to customize the final product, this type of photo book is (usually) premade and can only be customized with the photos you provide.
But the funny thing is that despite its look, a soft book is virtually indestructible, capable of withstanding any wear and tear. The baby can chew it, try to rip it apart, drool on it or leave smudges, the book – and the pictures that are placed behind clear vinyl pockets – will still hold itself together. And if you’re worried about dirt and smells, don’t: these books are washable.
Depending on the type of photo book there is some advice that should first be considered to achieve the best effect, but in the case of a soft photo book there are some strict rules. First and foremost, pictures need to be printed on photo paper that is baby-safe – in other words paper that cannot be damaged by the little one – even if they are kept behind the clear photo pockets. Second, remember for whom this book is mostly intended for, therefore limiting the photo range to a few pictures that depict the parents and grandparents together or alone, photos from the toddler’s early days or anyone that the baby should recognize.
At first these restrictions may sound ridiculous but, in all seriousness, showing the baby the same faces over and over again is a great stimulus for their developing brain, helping them to remember even those people that they rarely see. The effect is even better if the name of the people on the picture is uttered as they baby looks at it, or even if it is written or sewn onto the pages.
Although there is the option to create a cuddly photo album yourself, certain online retail stores are selling premade soft photo books in all shapes and forms that are available for affordable prices.
This soft photo book is perfect for baby boys and girls from three to 24 months old thanks to its easy-to-turn pages and a convenient handle that can withstand chewing and is easy to grasp even for babies.
By default, the photo book holds six 6×4 photos, but according to the manufacturer it could serve as a toy that “cultivates visual acuity”, too.
The Sassy Look Book can be purchased in the manufacturer’s shop for $7.99 or on Amazon for approximately $6.
Manufactured by Genius Babies, Inc. this baby photo album exists in two forms, one with a stylized baby cover and one with giraffes on it.
Regardless of the chosen cover, the book – which only weighs 1.6 ounces – is capable of holding up to 15 pictures (in 6×4 size) behind wipeable vinyl pockets. It also sports a baby-safe full-page mirror that guarantees entertainment for the little one for hours.
The album, which is usually sold for around $17-$20, is available at Amazon for as low as $14.
Although this photo album is the most expensive of the bunch – selling at $24.99 at both Amazon and the manufacturer – it’s the closest you’ll get to a more traditional photo book.
Not only does it have the dimensions of a real 8×8 photo book, but it also features customizable labels that can be inserted underneath the nine photos that the album can hold. And if that’s not enough, the book has soft-sewn, easy-to-turn pages that can withstand any wear and tear to bring joy to kids between zero and five years old.
