Well-renowned for its high-quality photo books, Shutterfly has a knack for bringing memories to life. Since its early days in 1999, the company has developed an impressive product range that includes photo cards, stationery, prints, calendars, gifts, and photo books that can be customized to your liking.
Shutterfly grants users full creative control when building their photo book. There are preset themes to choose from, as well as the option to have a book made for you with your photos and a theme of your choice. If you choose to craft the photo book yourself, then it can be created with the versatile editor, either from a desktop or mobile device.
Letting creativity run free, there are over 200 themes to choose from with an assortment of different paper types, sizes, and covers. Once your book is customized to your heart’s content, it can be ordered for affordable prices starting at $19.98. Plus, there are ways to make this price lower with occasional offers and bulk orders.
The online editor may seem a little complicated at first. Still, once we got the hang of it, we enjoyed navigating through the several layouts, backgrounds, and embellishments to personalize our book and make it unique.
It’s possible to upload photos from your device, Shutterfly storage, social media, or file-sharing sites. The handy ‘Idea pages’ tab displays preset layouts with backgrounds that match the theme chosen.
The themes can be changed at any time during the editing process, along with the book’s size and cover. It’s also possible to resize and rotate your photos, as well as add more photo holders or text boxes. However, to be able to do so, the ‘Advanced editing’ button needs to be selected. We found this button to be unnecessary, as these adjustments are basic editing tools that shouldn’t be highlighted as advanced.
You can also apply several extra effects to your photos, such as black and white, sepia, vintage, or fade. Still, note that some of these effects may seem a bit off when printed. Plus, the 5-minute auto-save is a bit slow compared to competing editors.
When it comes to image quality, this software has your back by removing red eyes from photos that may need it. It also displays low-resolution warnings, so if the image quality isn’t high enough for printing, you’re alerted to change it.
We especially enjoyed the fact that as you edit your book, you can see the price of it going up or down according to your edits. With this neat feature, you can build your book within your budget and avoid surprises during checkout.
Finally, it’s important to mention that you can create a photo book using mobile devices either from a browser or the iOS and Android apps. Although customization on mobile is limited in some ways, there are still options to adjust the photos, add funny doodles and stickers, and have the project auto-saved after each modification.
Shutterfly offers a variety of designs with 283 different styles across several categories. However, no matter which theme you choose, it can be modified later from within the editor.
The true highlight of the company is the free designer service. You can have one of Shutterfly’s designers create a book for you within 24 hours, for free. Once the design is ready, you can use it as it is or customize it yourself.
Shutterfly offers photo books in six sizes in either square, landscape or portrait shapes, covering the dimensions 8×8”, 8×11”, 10×10”, 11×8”, 11×14”, and 12×12”. Almost all sizes can be paired with all cover types, with the only exception being the 11×8” which can only have soft or hard cover.
A variety of covers are available, from basic soft covers to glossy or matte hard covers. There are also other types like eco leather, genuine leather, and acrylic. The premium styles of leather covers are the most luxurious options, which can be ordered with the deluxe layflat or flush mount pages.
Standard layflat pages are also available in hard covers books (glossy or matte), and soft cover books can only be ordered with standard quality pages.
Our photo book arrived well-packaged in a cardboard box with clear wrapping for extra protection. Once we unwrapped it, we could see the top-quality product exactly as we had envisioned it during the editing process.
By default, both the cover and the pages are quite glossy. Still, fingerprints are less visible on the pages than they are on the cover. The pages themselves are relatively rigid, which adds to the overall quality of the product but, at the same time, also makes it harder to keep the book open.
As for the printing itself, there’s no denying Shutterfly’s quality on this front: beautiful, vibrant colors, high-quality flyleaves and no defects whatsoever.
There are two minor nuisances, though: for one, the barcode on the back cover is bigger than it appears in the editor, so that’s something to keep in mind when designing the book. The other is that the pages have a strong, unpleasant odor – probably due to the printing process or the glue. So, we recommend leaving the book open for a few days to make the smell disappear.
Shutterfly‘s pricing structure doesn’t differ much from other photo book makers. The 8×8 soft cover book with standard pages is only $19.98. The prices change according to the size, type of cover, and paper quality. Prices for extra pages other than the default 20 start at $1.51 per page.
Shipping prices start at $4.99, but choosing to buy two or more books entitles you to a discounted shipping price for each of the additional books after the initial one. Processing and shipping takes 3-10 business days, depending on the chosen shipping method. International shipping is also available. Shipping to Canada costs between $6.99-$15.99, while the rest of the world must pay $13.99-$15.99.
Speaking of international shipping, we decided to put Shutterfly to the ultimate test and opted to deliver our test book to a European address. The production and delivery time for non U.S. destinations is promised to be 9-17 business days (7-13 business days for Canada) – and, in that regard, Shutterfly didn’t disappoint us at all.
Like most photo editing companies, Shutterfly relies on temporary discounts and coupons and has few permanent promotions. Still, you can enjoy some discounts if you buy a large quantity of photo books at once.
Lastly, when it comes to refunds, you’ll be eligible to get your money back if your book is damaged due to unforeseen circumstances. If, however, the mistake was your own, then you can claim back a refund of 50% of the original price. Keep in mind that if you return the defective book after 60 days, then the refund is issued as store credit.
Shutterfly has a comprehensive page fully dedicated to support options and information about its services. You can help yourself with numerous useful articles and step-by-step guides about the services offered. The articles are conveniently divided in categories, but there’s also a handy search box.
Still, if you can’t find the information you need, the support team is available via phone on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST. The cherry on top is the live chat, which is available 24/7.
Even though Shutterfly has some impressive features, there are a few disadvantages. The online editor is a bit complicated, its auto-save is slow, and the pricing structure doesn’t offer anything special.
However, what makes Shutterfly so spectacular is its wide variety of photo book themes, advanced customization, and quick photo book building. The fact that Shutterfly can create a photo book for you for free and your books can be covered in luxurious, more unusual options like premium leather are much welcomed extra features.
Moreover, thanks to the mobile versions, the timely production and shipping time, and the free designer service, creating a photo book with Shutterfly is bound to be a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Shutterfly has been a free service to store photos for years. As of October 2024 they made their customers to place an order once every 18 months as a condition to maintain access to the photos. Very disappointed.
Hi Gabriel, thank you for leaving a comment! It’s a shame that Shutterfly have introduced this change of photo storage policy. If you’re looking for a photo book builder with unlimited storage, it’s worth trying out Printique. Or, take a look at our Best Photo Books guide to compare many more options out there. Good luck in your search and have a great day 🙂
I just talked to Customer Service regarding an email I have received several times recently regarding the need to order within 28 days or my photos may be archived. I told the CS rep to look at my account, as I placed orders totaling over $700 March thru June 2024. Her advice was to put a $10 gift certificate in my account and purchase. I asked her if she did not understand that I had spent over $700 in the last 8 months? She put me on hold and when she came back, she told me to just ignore the emails. We will see what happens in 29 days, as I don’t feel comfortable with this response. Be aware of your order times. It is one order in 18 months, but you may still receive emails threatening to archive your photos if you don’t order in 28 days! Not a happy customer at the moment!
Hello Deb, thank you for leaving your feedback. It’s a shame to receive such emails after being such a loyal customer. Was this issue put right? If not, there are other photo book builders out there that do offer unlimited storage. You can check out our photo books guide to compare the options. Enjoy your day!
i created a book for my aunt for her sons party and send it to her mother in law . i did not see the finished product but her in laws were sooooo exited they keep saying its gorgeos as for my experience creating the book was really fun ad easy im working on a few other books for other family members freinds and myself and im so exited to receive them
Hello Sarah, and thanks for your comment. We’re happy to hear about your (as well as your aunt’s in-laws’) positive experience with Shutterfly. Indeed, this photo book builder provides an excellent service from the editing stage to the printed book. We wish you the best!
Do not try Photostory if you are using an IPad. I have made Shutterfly photo books as Christmas gifts for years on my IPads. This year I spent hours making the first one and the site wouldn’t let me order. I contacted them and was told to delete and reinstall the apps. I did and EVERYTHING was lost! So I spent a few hours on hold. Then with difficulty created another and ordered it though not perfect. I then created another and the same thing could’t order. Now I have been waiting over 30 hours for tech support. Don’t waste your time. They do not know what they are doing. Sorry I started this Christmas tradition. My family will be disappointed!
I have been using Shutterfly for a few years now and I find it very easy. I like the way I can choose a layout and then alter it to suit the photos. The choice of backgrounds is extensive and you can also use one of your own photos as a background and fade it accordingly. There have been a couple of times when the books have taken much longer to arrive but everything was sorted out quickly. And there have been a couple of occasions when there’s been a hiccup in the program. However their customer support team replies to any problem promptly. At this stage I don’t think I’ll be changing to another photobook – the more books you make the easier it is to navigate.
