Smartcanes: The New Replacements for Medical Alert Systems?

Smartcanes: The New Replacements for Medical Alert Systems?

Even though this year’s technological and invention fare – the Consumer Electronics Show – has already ended, the tech-savvy community is still in buzz after all the cool unveilings. We learned that the future lays in virtual reality, smart connectivity, 5G and most importantly the buzzing smart jeans. Jokes aside, CES 2017 was unconventional in the sense that there were a number of innovations aimed especially at the aging community. The most noteworthy product that would make the head of every elderly turn was the Smartcane.

A guardian you can lean on

The Smartcane’s idea was developed by a French startup company called Nov’in, and they are working with the renowned Maison Fayet that has a long history when it comes to manufacturing walking sticks for elderly. However, they decided to step up their game and come up with something truly innovative that not only supports, but also protects their senior customers. The Smartcane may be deceptive at first, since it doesn’t differ much from a regular walking aid. However, it houses refined smart technology and a number of advanced features. As it stands now, the Smartcane has two functions (besides helping the elderly walk): first, it has built-in motion sensors, accelerometers and gyroscopes, which are meant to accurately track the aging user’s movement. The software also learns the elderly’s walking habits, and notifies the family members or the caregivers when it registers a sudden drop in activity.

Smartcanes vs fall detection buttons

Movement tracking isn’t the only trick of the Smartcane. The aforementioned sensors are capable of detecting vertical changes as well. In case the elderly collapses on the street, the cane immediately sends text or email notifications to the designated family members or caregivers. In other words, the intelligent walking stick uses the same technology as the fall detection buttons presented by medical alert companies. So does this mean that the two are interchangeable? Hardly. First of all, the Smartcane doesn’t connect you to a well-trained monitoring team like the press of a medical alert button does. Second, the fall detection technology isn’t guaranteed 100% of the time. Most fall detection pendants don’t register a fall when the wearer falls from 2 feet or less, or slowly slips to the ground from a chair. However, the motion tracking technology and the different positioning of the cane provides a second line of defense. In the end, it’s best to use the two in conjunction.
