When it comes to maintenance, one of the most frequently mentioned applications among Redditors and longtime Mac users is OnyX. Created by French developer Joël Barrière as a multifunctional tool for Mac optimization, OnyX lets you control many basic Unix programs already built into macOS. Such controls include verifying the startup disk, running a range of miscellaneous and cleaning tasks, configuring various parameters, deleting caches, and listing all installed items included in the package files of applications that users have installed on their computer.

OnyX is freeware and the main application Joël Barrière has developed after the launch of OS X Jaguar, in 2003. Titanium Software, his company's website registered as a French domain, lists another two applications also developed by Barrière, Maintenance and Deeper. The former is a system maintenance and cleaning utility for macOS that takes OnyX's maintenance functionalities and puts it into a separate app, while Deeper focuses on offering personalization options for macOS users, such as enabling or disabling the hidden functions of various apps and more.

iMobie, a China-based company established in 2011, built its business around Apple's: the team of developers is focused on iOS device content management, iOS data recovery and Mac utility software. Alongside apps targeting iPhone, iPad and iPod users, such as AnyTrans (for managing file transfers), PhoneRescue and PhoneClean, MacClean is designed solely to keep your Mac clean and safe from malware.

MacClean is a freemium app, meaning it can be downloaded and used for free, although limitations do apply. In its free form this Mac optimization software will scan your computer on demand and display how much data can be safely removed from the startup disk. However, to perform a cleaning operation you will need to buy a lifetime license for as low as $7.99.

Standing out in the Mac optimizer market is never an easy thing, especially if rogue advertisers have been trying to forcefully sell your product for years – leaving you with a bad reputation. MacKeeper, originally created by Dubai-based Kromtech in 2010, has had to revamp its image completely since its acquisition by Clario in 2019. So while many may know the name MacKeeper from a wave of aggressive online advertising campaigns, the company now says that these tactics are a thing of the past. MacKeeper is instead focusing on the product by adding extra features like the StopAd web extension and a free VPN to its list of system scans and utilities. Depending how long you want the service, MacKeeper can be quite affordable with prices starting from $6.21 per month paid annually.

Although the market is crammed with many well-known Mac optimization software (some of which we have reviewed thoroughly already), there are still plenty of optimizers out there to choose from if you're ready to accept a few compromises or risks. Sometimes it's possible to come across hidden gems, while other times you might find a solution that is not that spectacular, but manages to do the job anyway. Hailing from India, Advanced Mac Cleaner is the latter, offering a basic cleaning solution despite a name that literally has the word “advanced” in it. If you purchase this software – which actually becomes cheaper the more you use it – you will get access to a decent client with the most important cleanup options, ranging from a voice-aided full scan and cleanup to such rarities as a rogue app remover. Not only that but you'll also get access to an uninstaller, internet history wiper and a file manager, with which you can keep other parts of your Mac clean as well.

While Piriform may be best known for its Microsoft Gold partner app, CCleaner for PCs, the British company is also knocking it out of the park with its Mac optimization service. CCleaner for Mac brings a long list of helpful features to the table, all wrapped up in a simple and modern app.

From macOS Sierra onwards, any Mac can be brought up to speed in mere seconds, with the deleting of data ranging from duplicate files to cache and cookies. It's possible to remove apps, change startup processes, and even monitor your Mac's CPU in real time.

All this is included in the generous free-forever version. However, upgrading to a premium plan is possible for only $2.49 per month for the Professional plan. Opting for the Professional Plus bundle results in even higher savings, at $1.10 per device per month. Both plans come with annual billing, 24/7 technical assistance, and a 30-day money-back guarantee for any commitment-phobes.

With over 15 years of experience, MacPaw has become one of the leaders of the Mac optimization industry – with good reason. Its biggest success is CleanMyMac, a straightforward Mac optimization solution.

It’s equipped with numerous tools to improve your Mac’s performance, including extensive smart scans, file cleanup, anti-malware, and app management. Catering to all customers, there are flexible pricing options, including a 30-day money-back guarantee on top of a 7-day free trial and discounts on longer subscriptions.

Ooma is a smart communication platform favored by small businesses and homeowners. However, the world of telecommunication isn't enough for the company, and so they decided to branch out into several different fields to make their user's life more convenient. Beside their efforts involving VoIP and internet security, Ooma also created a smart home security initiative. The premise is simple: link a set of sensors to your existing Ooma Telo communication device and receive updates on your smartphone every time an alarm is triggered. Even better, you can place a 911 call remotely from your home, sending your data to the emergency dispatcher. Ooma currently features three types of sensors and a basic kit for sale. Of course, additional devices can be purchased later on.
