Since its foundation in 2009 Resume Companion has helped over 9 million users create their resumes and finding the job of their dreams. This company also runs a non-profit organization called Resumes for America aiding U.S. college and university students in learning the basics of resume writing and a scholarship program which awards $1.000 to the student who can write the best resume for a fictional or non-fictional character of his/her own choice. Naturally, Resume Companion also helps the regular job seekers with its resume builder services with plenty of options. If you become a subscriber of the software – in a rather nasty method – you will get access to 8 resume templates, over 40 pre-written cover letters, downloading, printing and sending your works and professional help from resume experts. Resume Companion further assists in landing a new job with its job search engine and job alerts, countless resume and cover letter samples, writing tips, alongside advices regarding job seeking on the website and in a blog.
When you successfully create an account – and hopefully get over the initial shock we’ll talk about later on – you can start exploring the dashboard which consists of the home screen, your resumes, cover letters, the job search engine, additional features like interviews and the experts’ page. On the homepage you can find a Quick Start Guide, a step-by-step list of to-dos you should follow to complete the process of getting hired.
Despite not being able to upload existing CVs to your account, creating a resume with Resume Companion is relatively easy as you can choose from different templates, customize the number and order of the CV sections – with the exception of Contact Info – and you don’t have to worry about typos, as the software utilizes the built-in spell-checker of your browser. Furthermore, if your resume is done, you can send it to an expert who will review your work and help you make the CV even better.
The cover letter option of Resume Companion is incredible: there are 41 different cover letters for everything from simple cover letters to networking, pre- and post-review, follow up and miscellaneous letters. All of them are pre-written, meaning that you only have to insert certain new data into the letters and you can already send them to anyone, including your future employer.
Once the resume and the cover letter is ready, you can download them in TXT, DOC and PDF format, but you also have the option to send them via email, and print, rename, duplicate or even delete your works. Then you can use the job search engine powered by ZipRecruiter to list available jobs and set a job alert that sends you email notifications if jobs matching your search results appear in the search engine.
As mentioned before, you can only create resumes and cover letters from scratch in your browser – although using Resume Companion on a mobile browser is not as fluent. After you have chosen your template, you only have to fill out the necessary data, then you have to click on Save and Continue to move onto the next level indicated by the progress bar on the right. With the exception of Contact Info, all the other 13 sections can be customized, renamed and even added as many times as you want. However, most of these sections can only be saved after the required texts are added and you clicked on the Save and Add Other button before moving on. After the resume is ready, you are asked again to choose your template, which you can preview. Then you are redirected to your resume page where you can download, print, send your CVs.
Resume Companion offers presents you with 8 different templates, the fonts and colors of which cannot be changed within the software. However, you can download all of the templates with different font colors in ZIP files from the company’s website even without setting up an account on Resume Companion. This solution is a bit weird, because if you can download the templates for free, then what’s the point of having the software in the first place?
Another thing worth mentioning about the templates: unfortunately none of them are photo CV templates, so you have to add them manually from Word after downloading your resumes from your account. The same feature is valid for cover letters: you get access to the same 8 templates which you can only modify if you download them in DOC format.

You can only use Resume Companion if you pay $1.95 first. For this price you will finally get unlimited CVs and cover letters, download option in text, DOC and PDF format, a free resume review by experts, a job search engine and job alerts. However, the $1.95 is only valid for the first 14 days, which the company considers a trial period. If you don’t cancel your subscription by the 14th day, you not only don’t get your $1.95 refunded, but your subscription automatically renews and you have to pay $39.95 per month from then on. The other option is to pay annually: you have to pay $7.95 per month from the very beginning, but you still save 75%.
The customer support of Resume Companion has plenty of options: you can call the staff or start a live chat, which is available from Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm. You can also send the company an email which is usually answered within 1–2 business days.
Aside from these common support options, you also get access to many resume examples with useful tips on how to write an outstanding CV for different sectors of the job market. Like we mentioned before you can download the resume templates, but you can also find format guides, cover letter samples and writing guides, and a blog with other tips to successfully apply for jobs.
If you are in a hurry and you need a professional CV within 1–3 business days, Resume Companion recommends ResumeWriterDirect.com with expert writers. However, this service is not part of Resume Companion and it costs extra money.
Resume Companion should be respected for being on the resume builder market for quite a long time. However, it is quite clear that pressure from other companies took its toll and Resume Companion desperately tries everything to stay afloat. We think that this is the reason behind the company’s pricing policy which will only result in the opposite of the company’s plans: it will not draw in new customers, but chase them away. It is a huge shame, because the software itself is totally acceptable: there’s a decent amount of templates, logical interface, and a nice job search engine with job alerts.
And if we take into consideration the exceptional pre-written cover letter collection, auditing by resume experts, the outstanding customer support and the Resume for America and scholarship programs supporting the next generation of workers, it is clear that Resume Companion could be a leader.
