While the 2013 Melissa McCarthy film ‘Identity Thief’ is a hilarious take on con artistry, it sheds light on the real threat of identity theft. Fraudsters may have become sophisticated, but thankfully, so have identity theft protection solutions like the incredible OmniWatch.

Created in 2023 and only available in the U.S., this service monitors users’ identities on the dark web and keeps their credit in check while warning about the latest data breach threats.

What distinguishes OmniWatch is its equal commitment to protecting against and resolving identity theft. Its dedicated restoration specialists, available 24/7, guarantee swift and effective recoveries with up to $2 million in coverage.

Setup

U.S.-based OmniWatch is user-friendly right from the start. Its neatly designed website has an accessibility toolkit for adjusting visual elements like contrast, color, spacing, and font size. The platform is only available online, with no browser extensions or dedicated apps.

Still, the setup is effortless. Users create their accounts, providing basic information, before choosing one of two plans and entering their payment info. For advanced features like identity restoration, insurance, and lost wallet services, the platform requires identity verification with TransUnion and documents like a driver’s license, passport, or Social Security number.

Once inside the OmniWatch account, the dashboard displays your identity threat score – a rating from one to ten based on your existing level of exposed data. This is also where you can find the latest information on data breaches and your real-time credit score.

Monitoring and alerts

As a young player in the industry, OmniWatch mainly focuses on providing three types of service: dark web monitoring, credit monitoring and locking, and identity theft insurance and restoration.

The service sends emails and texts to its users when new data breaches occur that may impact them. The alerts on the latest data breaches are displayed on a ticker in the main dashboard.

OmniWatch scours the depths of the dark web for over 130 categories of information, from search history to health and marital status. We were particularly fond of the convenient Identity Risk Score tool, which attributes a rating to the user’s level of exposed data to guide them through risk mitigation.

Unfortunately, OmniWatch’s scope of identity monitoring stops at the dark web. Unlike other companies, it doesn’t cover crucial areas like financial activity, USPS monitoring, or social media accounts. On the bright side, its identity restoration services are as comprehensive as those of its competitors.

OmniWatch’s Credit Lock+ can freeze your TransUnion credit file, stopping anyone from opening a new account in your name. The service also monitors Equifax and Experian accounts to prevent unauthorized credit access. Plus, every 90 days, subscribers of OmniWatch’s Premium plan can receive a comprehensive credit report from all three bureaus, displayed side by side for easy comparison.

We weren’t too pleased with OmniWatch’s privacy policy, which reveals that the company may share personal information for targeted advertising. Although opt-out forms are provided, it’s concerning that an identity theft protection company would allow data sharing for such purposes.

Recovery

The pillar of OmniWatch’s services is its recovery support in the unsettling event of identity theft. It’s immediate, live, and handled by a team of U.S.-based specialists who will guide you through the restoration process, contact your financial institutions, and handle any tiresome paperwork.

Besides being able to lock your TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian accounts, OmniWatch has an incredible insurance policy. Users can count on up to $2 million in reimbursements for identity theft events, with coverage for various expenses, including legal fees, resubmitting rejected applications, and even travel costs. With the top plan, you can also get up to $25,000 for ransomware protection.

Unfortunately, the service does not offer focused care for special customers like children, nor does it come with the option to add a new user to plans, so it might not be the best choice if you’re seeking family-wide protection.

Pricing

The Basic plan costs only $9.99 per month and introduces users to essential protection features such as dark web monitoring, TransUnion credit reports, and access to 24/7 U.S.-based identity restoration agents.

However, customers looking to take advantage of everything OmniWatch has to offer should turn to the Premium plan. For $14.99 per month, subscribers unlock credit monitoring and dedicated reports from all three bureaus, plus an extra $25,000 in ransomware protection.

Both plans only support one user, which may put off some since many customers seeking an identity protection service seek solutions offering family-wide advantages and discounted packages.

OmniWatch supports Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and PayPal, and unfortunately, it doesn’t provide refunds.

OmniWatch provides customer assistance via email, phone, or chat. Users can also get in touch by filling out an online form with questions. The U.S.-based customer care team is reachable toll-free at (877) 892-8249 on workdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time.

Although phone support for general inquiries only operates within these hours, OmniWatch clients can benefit from 24/7 access to fraud restoration services, which is crucial in the event of identity theft.

For those keen to help themselves, OmniWatch’s support, blog, and FAQ pages provide some insights into identity theft scenarios and answer any basic questions about the service. However, these readable resources are too general and lack comprehensive information about the service’s particularities. The same goes for the company’s social media, as its Facebook and X accounts don’t shine much light on the service.

Bottom line

OmniWatch is a modern solution to the old problem of identity theft. It boasts a $2 million insurance policy plus $25,000 for ransomware protection with its top plan. Although its monitoring abilities focus on the dark web over other important sources, OmniWatch’s Identity Score metrics help you keep a close eye out for breaches affecting your data.

OmniWatch offers two affordable plans, a basic subscription with all the key features, and a slightly pricier option for those who want more well-rounded protection.

Overall, OmniWatch is a solid choice for individuals seeking a user-friendly and simple way to safeguard their identity. While there are aspects to improve, like the lack of family plans and the limited scope of sources monitored, OmniWatch excels in delivering essential identity protection and financial peace of mind.
