Lingoda is the perfect language-learning service for people looking for live classes but still wanting flexible schedules. Instead of repeating exercises, Lingoda enables its users to schedule one-hour lessons with real teachers 24/7. Lessons can be solo or in a group, and all teachers are native speakers. Unfortunately, it only offers courses in four languages: Spanish, German, French, and English. It’s also more expensive than other language-learning apps where lessons average the $10 mark. However, people who are committed to taking daily lessons for three months straight can get refunded up to 100%. Students can try Lingoda through the 7-day free trial available for the Monthly and Marathon subscriptions.

Since Lingoda bases its service on live sessions, the service is straightforward. There aren’t your standard language-learning exercises, and everything is learned in class.

Booking classes is easy. Lingoda displays recommended lessons happening on the following days that can be filtered by private or group session, time, and topic. All lessons come with learning material that can be downloaded in PDF. This document contains the topics discussed in class and is what the teachers use to structure the lesson.

In Lingoda, classes are booked by choosing a subject, not by an individual teacher. This means that students can’t stick with their favorite professors through the course. However, all the teachers are more than qualified to give the class and are also native speakers. If a teacher doesn’t perform as expected, students can provide anonymous feedback at the end of the session to ensure their improvement.

Lingoda only offers four languages: Spanish, German, French, and English. However, since the programs are so thorough, if you’re thinking about learning one of these languages, it’s definitely worth your while.

Course structure

Courses in Lingoda are very similar to traditional language schools and are meticulously structured. People returning to a learned language should take the 20-minute placement test to know their level before subscribing.

Lingoda offers programs from A1 all the way up to C2 level and provides a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) certificate after completion. Courses are divided by chapters, each containing various lessons. Though it depends on the level, students can expect around 50 classes (each one taking one hour) to finish their course. This means that students taking the Sprint challenge may go up two levels after the 90 days of daily sessions. It’s possible to take lessons in the order preferred, but all need to be finished to conclude the program.

The only way to access Lingoda’s platform is through its mobile-optimized website, which is user-friendly and has a clean design. At the top, users can find three different tabs: ‘My Classes’ display the student’s progress and upcoming sessions, ‘Book Classes’ offers an easy way to schedule lessons, and ‘My Course’ provides an overview of the program’s structure.

While scheduling lessons, users can filter the options for an easier setup. It’s possible to choose the class level, weekdays, hour range, topics, as well as choose between private and group classes. To make sure you’re scheduling at the right hour, go to the settings and ensure that the time zone is correct.

Lingoda uses the third-party web conferencing software Zoom. When it’s time to join a session, users will find a ‘Go To Classroom’ button on the ‘My Classes’ tab. Clicking this will automatically start Zoom and, before you know it, you’ll be in class. Joining lessons on mobile is possible, but users should install the Zoom app for a better experience.

Pricing

Lingoda‘s pricing is a bit complex and depends on each specific case. However, as a rule of thumb, remember that German courses and private lessons are more expensive throughout the three packages – Monthly, Marathon, and Sprint. Keep in mind that both the Monthly and Marathon plans come with a 7-day free trial followed by a 7-day money-back guarantee.

As the name implies, the Monthly plan is a month-to-month subscription, perfect for those who don’t want to commit to Lingoda right away. Within this plan, you can get different lesson packages, where the more classes you attend each month, the cheaper the cost. Sessions can be as low as $9.50 if you attend 10 classes a week.

Meanwhile, the Marathon plan is for students who are going to stick with Lingoda for the long run. It’s possible to get a three-, six-, or twelve-month subscription. As usual, the longer you commit, the lower the price. The best part is that Lingoda refunds some of the money when you attend 90% of the lessons purchased. This means that you can pay as little as $6.75 per session.

The Sprint and Full Sprint subscriptions are your way to learn a new language the fastest at the lowest rates possible. The Sprint Challenge offers 50% of your money back if you complete 15 lessons per month, three months straight. And if you’re really motivated, you can get the full course for free by completing the Super Sprint challenge. However, this is difficult, as you’ll have to attend a class every day for three months, weekends included.

Lingoda does a tremendous job explaining its service. As such, its FAQ is more than enough most of the time. There is always a handful of answered questions at the bottom of each subscription’s page and thorough downloadable PDFs explaining each challenge. However, if users face a more specific problem, there are several ways to get in touch with the customer support team. On the website, there’s a request submission system, but it’s also possible to send an email or phone the company. Furthermore, there’s also the possibility to turn to social media where Lingoda is present on all popular platforms. Facebook is the best one to ask the support team a question since the chat is open to the public and the team takes only a few hours to answer back.

Bottom line

There aren’t many language-learning companies that put as much effort into their students’ success as Lingoda. Instead of just saying that it’s essential to have an objective when learning a new language, Lingoda actually gives a monetary prize that can go up to the course’s full cost. And although the Sprint program might be too much for casual learners, there are still ways to save money. The Marathon plan’s steady pace still offers impressive refunds while having lessons scattered throughout the subscription period. One thing is certain: if you’re committed, you’ll be rewarded. Lingoda is perfect for people looking for real classes while having the comfort of learning at their own schedule and location.
