Is Facebook Starting to Apply Censorship?

Facebook is one of those things that nowadays needs no introduction as everyone knows what it is and what’s its purpose to this world. But what started as an innocent “connect with your friends” idea quickly became one of the biggest means of transmitting information and Facebook is indeed a big news platform today. Nonetheless, its worldwide presence and close to 2 billion users suffer from diverse oppressive regime laws and there has been a rather large increase in censorship happening within the largest social network’s boundaries.

The palestinian trouble

Recently, Zuckerberg’s golden egg chicken has been under fire and he had to publicly apologize for allegedly having censored Palestinian journalists belonging to two of the most extensively read online publications of that country. Quds and Shehab News have over 11 million “likes” between each other and were the target of such censorship as its administrators found their accounts suspended by the social network.

As it usually happens in cases like these, political reasons are believed to be behind the Palestinian blocks due to an agreement between Facebook and the Israeli government to eliminate any content that may incite violence. The relationship between Israelis and Palestinians has been very tense for years, and since social networks became a common presence in the territory the violence has increased. This is exactly what’s defended by Israel, as the government claims that such violence is incited via Facebook, and it blames Zuckerberg’s social network for the increase in Palestinian attacks. Therefore, the aforementioned agreement was formed between Israel and Facebook so that the latter can have a word to say regarding potentially dangerous content published.

The Palestinians deny this version and claim that online incitation has nothing to do with the attacks and that they were due to almost half a century of military occupation. Regardless of who’s right, Israel has its own proper legislation that would force not only Facebook but every other social media network to permanently remove all content that could be considered as an incitement to terrorism in the making.

Allegedly Facebook kept its word and proceeded to such blockings although the social network came to public to say “We’re very sorry about this mistake” and blame such event as a flaw within its reporting system as it stated that “our team processes millions of reports each week, and we sometimes get things wrong”. Nevertheless, the fact is the Palestinian editor’s’ account blocks did actually happen.

Avoiding censorship

Because of this, and the upswing of other online censorship actions by governments and companies, you are the one who needs to take measures and always come out on top of the situation. If you care about freedom of speech and full transparency, you should consider investing in IP disguising software such as a VPN. While connected to the internet via a VPN connection, your actions are anonymous and hidden from the prying eyes of Facebook and other social media websites. VPNs have servers across the globe that enable you to get access to otherwise censored information in a specific country by only changing your virtual location to a country where such blocks are inexistent.
