HideMyAss Teams Up With AVG

HideMyAss Teams Up With AVG

HideMyAss VPN AVG

Software company AVG Technologies has announced the acquisition of VPN service provider and mobile privacy firm Privax, in a deal which could be worth up to $60 million. Privax is better known as the parent company behind the popular HideMyAss VPN service. The HideMyAss VPN service is currently able to boast more than 250,000 paid subscribers globally, and is available on the two most popular mobile operating systems, Android and iOS.

If you are an existing HideMyAss subscriber, not much will change, with the VPN service continuing to operate independently, according to the company’s founder and CEO, Jack Cator. However, the addition of Privax’s full range of security solutions will significantly bolster AVG’s portfolio and provide them with new opportunities for the future.

Mobile security

As mobile internet use continues to rise, security on mobile devices has also become increasingly important. HideMyAss’s subscribers are able to connect to servers located all around the world, encrypting their internet connection, obscuring their location, protecting themselves from snooping and securing their online communications.

“As we connect through more and more devices, our privacy is becoming increasingly violated,” explained Gary Kovacs, the CEO of AVG. “With this acquisition, we will immediately be able to provide new and innovative privacy and security services to hundreds of millions of users worldwide.”

AVG Zen integration

According to the press release published by AVG, the HideMyAss subscription service will be incorporated into future software releases, including integration with AVG Zen.

The complete range of Privax security solutions will remain available separately, but will also be marketed through AVG’s distribution channels, which have allowed them to reach 200 million people. In addition to their VPN service, the free HideMyAss web proxy attracts up to eight million unique visitors every month and this will stay operational.

As per the terms of the acquisition, AVG have paid $40 million up front, with the remaining $20 million to be paid in one year, assuming Privax achieves all of its agreed targets.
