A recent report, published by Kaspersky, found that between Q2 2024 and Q1 2025, hackers carried out over 250,000 cyber attacks by disguising malware files as popular anime titles.
The report says bad actors used keywords like “exclusive episodes” and “premium access” to mislead users into downloading infected files. The anime titles used as bait were primarily Attack on Titan, Naruto, and Demon Slayer.
This cyberattack took advantage of Gen Z’s passion for digital content. This demographic uses streaming platforms heavily and has a particular affinity for anime, which made the bait more efficient.
For example, the report highlights Netflix as one of the most used platforms for tricking users, being involved in over 85,000 attack attempts and linked to over 2.8 million phishing sites. Other cyber attack methods included fake free trial links and spoofed password reset emails.
To educate Gen Z’s demographic, Kaspersky launched “Case 404” – an online game where they must investigate cybercrime cases. Those who complete the game receive a discount for a Kaspersky Premium subscription.
