When talking about home security, most people instantly think of cameras, as they are the most recognizable part of a security net. Sadly most people are turned off when seeing the actual prices of equipping your home with such surveillance monitoring. Cameras aren’t meant for every home, but knowing the actual benefits of a silently supervised property never hurts. For example, Frontpoint Security sports some quality equipment when it comes to video monitoring. They offer cameras for indoor and outdoor purposes, plus one exciting extra. And the best thing: you can access the video feed remotely from your smartphone, computer or tablet, so you stay up to date even while at work.

Equipment

Frontpoint Security offers three kinds of video monitoring units: an outdoor, an indoor, and a doorbell camera. All of them operate wirelessly, thus you only need a power adapter and power outlet to make them work without any extra cabling. This also means that the setup can be done by yourself: no professional handymen needed to be hired for the job. All three cameras sync well with the wireless router, and if you have problems, a step-by-step guide is included in every package. The indoor camera costs $129.99; the outdoor camera charges you $399.99; while the doorbell camera comes for $189.99.

Indoor cameras

Frontpoint’s indoor camera is suited for tracking every kind of action inside the house. With its help you can monitor your home after hearing suspicious noises during the night, check on the kids while working or see for yourself whether the maid slacks off again. The indoor camera is fitted with night vision and produces HD quality footage in full-color. The resolution scales between 1280×800 and 176×144. It’s small, lightweighted and boasts a slick, stylish design. The field of view is above 100°, and up to 10 people can watch the live feed simultaneously through the Frontpoint Security app for iPhone and Android.

Outdoor cameras

The outdoor camera is your frontline fighter that functions as a relentless guard, as well as a scarecrow, since the mere presence of it discourages burglars from breaking in. The camera was built to resist the forces of nature: it’s completely weatherproof, and it maintains a working stance even below freezing temperature or in scorching sunlight. It can be programmed to record short video clips instead of switching to live feed when sensing movement. Just like the indoor camera, this unit is also fitted with night vision, and capable of the same HD footage, but with a smaller field of view.

Doorbell cameras

The doorbell camera actually replaces your old doorbell. Its main purpose is to show the tenant how is standing at the doorstep without actually opening the door. It has a built-in motion sensor, two-way audio to communicate, and the footage is forwarded to your smartphone so you can view who’s at your front door. You can still expect an HD feed with 1080×720 resolution, and it’s equipped with night-vision technology.

Camera monitoring

Video monitoring is regarded as a premium feature at Frontpoint Security. The basic package doesn’t include any cameras, which means you need to purchase each one separately. But simply owning the monitoring equipment isn’t enough, because the streaming support and smartphone access is only available in the top-tier Ultimate plan. Opting for these features, you receive access to a live camera feed 24/7, and any saved clip can be later watched again on your smartphone or tablet. Setting up cameras also means that the professional monitoring team of Frontpoint is also able to check on your home when an alarm goes off, thus relieving you from taking direct actions.

Never really used the system/service. Tried to cancel the contract but was unable to cancel since they set the cancellation fee almost the same as the remaining balance. After one year contract, still get charged each month. Think carefully before getting into a contract that you will not be able to cancel even if you don’t use the service.

September 2017

In November of 2014 I contacted Frontpoint and explained to them that we were building a downstairs apartment in our home, and that I was interested in opening an account. I explained to the salesman [name redacted] that we were at least a year away from being ready to actually install the system, but that I wanted to have the equipment on hand. As a condition of the sale, it was agreed between [name redacted] and myself that we would not be billed until the system went live. In spite of this, we started seeing monthly charges debited from our credit card. We received the alarm system, and in late 2015 our local police station shut, so the Frontpoint system was no longer viable for us. I called Frontpoint and explained the situation, and they agreed to take back the alarm system. They never provided us any service. Today I spoke with [name redacted] at Frontpoint, and he has refused to refund any of the almost $1000 they debited from our credit card. We are old and we really need that money. We were defrauded.
