Regardless of what you think of job seeking in general, we all know that creating a professional-looking resume that stands out from the rest is a tedious process. You can create the best resume of the world, but face it: you might end up wasting many hours with fonts, margins, bullet lists, columns in MS Word or LibreOffice – and still not get the job. However, do not throw your resume out in frustration; it only needs a little help from software which can format the resume for you.
This is when online resume builders come in.
Most online resume builders only allow you to create resumes from scratch, but many sites, like VisualCV, are capable of importing data from LinkedIn profiles, DOC, DOCX, PDF documents and, in the case of LiveCareer and Super-Resume, from ODT, plain text and even RTF. All you need to do is sign up for the services of such a resume builder and you can start uploading your files thereto with a few clicks. If your original document is already arranged in a way a resume should look, the software automatically recognizes the different sections and puts them in their right places. You can add or delete sections, get useful tips from the software, replace existing texts with sample phrases written by professionals, and format the entire text the way you normally would in Word/LibreOffice like adding bullet lists and such.
Many resume builders have built-in spell-checkers so you can always spot mistakes before sending out these crucial documents to your potential employers. Then you just need to do a few adjustments like choosing the fitting template, change the font face and color, sometimes the margins and spaces between lines etc. and you are ready to download your fully prepared resumes in PDF, sometimes in DOC, or just host them in the cloud with a link directing to your documents. Moreover, most resume builders are capable of creating cover letters – which can also be uploaded from external sources – and they can be in the exact same format as your resumes.
Online resume builders are usually not for free, but if they are, their capabilities are limited. VisualCV, for instance, is a brilliant resume builder with a fantastic tracking system, complete mobile access and a superb editor – but if you choose the free subscription, you cannot create more than 2 resumes. Other sites like LiveCareer – which has a user-friendly editor, built-in spell-checker, a resume examiner and a job board – and Super-Resume – which allows you to search for sample resumes and even edit them as your own – have pricing policies that block the download/email/print features until you pay your subscription fee, making the software virtually useless.
So are resume builders worth it? Yes, they are! Because let’s face it, none of us are capable of creating professional looking resumes the way this software does. And if a subscription fee is the price of the perfect resume, we’d gladly pay it any day.
