Check, Proofread, Repeat and Apply

Check, Proofread, Repeat and Apply

Whether you like this cliché or not, a good looking resume, which is basically your business card, is not everything.

If a hiring manager sees that your resume is full of errors you could have easily avoided then you can say goodbye to the job you are applying for, stabbing your self-esteem in the heart.

But it doesn’t have to be like this! All you need to do is check, double-check, triple-check, then check again

Self-checking – with caution

This method is a bit tricky, because after a while you will see your work-in-progress resume so much that you will inevitably concentrate on the most important parts only – and not even think about such crucial aspects like grammar, consistency, past/present tense, active/passive voice etc. However, you can check whether your contact info and references are still ok. The contact info is obvious: you cannot allow yourself to provide a false email address or phone number as you might end up missing an important call/email. You also need to do that with your references as their contact info might be outdated too. Furthermore, you have to include only those references in your resume that are relevant to the job you are applying for.

Check-up by family members, other acquaintances

Do not be ashamed of asking help from family members, friends, teachers or even ex-colleagues! They know you well; therefore, they are familiar with your style and the phrases you are typically using. Furthermore, as they have never read your resume before, they will more likely provide a better review of your resume, spot the errors and give you tips about how to improve your document. You don’t need to ask every single acquaintance to review your resume, but if you can get the opinion of 3–7 people, that’s perfectly enough.

Review by professionals

You also have the option to turn to a professional resume writer who can review your document and provide thorough feedback thereon. There are some services like The Resume Center and TopResume that provide resume feedback for free, but most of the time this service has to be paid for. Furthermore, if you want more than just proofreading – like editing your resume the way a professional document should look – or writing your resume from scratch, you might end up paying a fortune.

Other review methods

Who said there are no alternatives for resume proofreading? There is Grammarly, which can be used as either a Google Chrome or an MS Word extension. With this tool, which is available for free or for a pay-only premium format, you can double-check your writings, get suggestions for fitting synonyms, receive weekly grammar tips and much more. You can also ask help from online communities like Reddit which has an entire section dedicated to create and check resumes of others.

And let’s not forget about resume builders as many of them contain built-in spell-checkers, foolproof pre-written phrases, and in some cases you can check your resume from a hiring manager’s point of view or evaluate your documents to see whether it stands the big test.
