Best VPNs for Suriname

Best VPNs for Suriname

By Richard C.Richard C. Verified by Adam B.Adam B. Last updated: July 30, 2024 (0)

Suriname is a small country in which just 47% of the population, approximately 200,000 Surinamese citizens, are connected to the internet. So, it’s an unlikely destination for using a VPN but there are definite benefits you don’t get elsewhere. Since Suriname became independent from the Netherlands in 1975, it has been through a lot but it’s now a stable and developing country. The country has a lot of personal freedom and uncensored internet, meaning using a Surinamese VPN will allow users to access websites banned in other countries. Suriname’s size also doesn’t stop the South American country from hosting some of the biggest streaming services either, with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video available as well as plenty of music services, including the recent Latin American and Caribbean service TrackDrip.

Using a Surinamese IP

In the latest report, Freedom House ranked Suriname as a “free” country, and a part of that comes from Suriname’s lack of internet restriction. So, when using a VPN to connect to a Surinamese IP, you won’t find yourself blocked from accessing any websites. This internet freedom also means you’re unlikely to find Surinamese websites that block users from logging on overseas. There’s very little local streaming, with just a few local radio stations that can be streamed from everywhere in the world. Most streaming in Suriname comes from big international companies like Netflix and Amazon. Unfortunately, Suriname’s internet speeds aren’t the best in South America although they are generally faster than neighbors Guyana and French Guiana.

Surinamese online privacy laws

In 2018 Suriname updated its online privacy laws to ensure greater digital safety for its citizens and to catch up with much of the rest of the world in this respect. Companies now need authorization from a person before taking their data and any foreign company that deals with a Surinamese citizen or company will have to adhere to the new Surinamese privacy law. Still, the laws aren’t perfect, so we’d recommend people based in Suriname use a VPN regardless due to the added anonymity and security it will give you online.

Internet censorship in Suriname

There are no restrictions to internet access in Suriname and there’s no internet censorship either. So, using a Surinamese VPN means you’ll be able to access any website that has been blocked by another country, including P2P websites.

Despite Surinamese law protecting the right to freedom of speech and freedom of press, there are unfortunately still instances of self-censorship in the Surinamese media due to threats of violence against journalists. One caveat to Suriname’s freedom of speech law is that “public expression of hatred” towards the government is punishable by up to seven years in prison under a draconian defamation law. There’s currently no evidence to suggest that the Surinamese government spies on its citizens online but some journalists do believe that they have been monitored – this is especially concerning since the current president was accused of murdering dissidents, including journalists, in 1982.

Surname was once famous for having a large number of casinos but since a government crackdown that figure has shrunk greatly. However online gambling is legal and there are a lot of online casinos to choose from.

Streaming services in Suriname

Suriname has a surprisingly good selection of streaming services when you consider the small number of potential subscribers from a population of approximately just half a million. HBO Go, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video are all available in the country – a solid line up. Although, none of the local TV channels possess any live TV streaming or on-demand services and you won’t be able to access the likes of Hulu and BBC iPlayer.

Spotify and Google Play Music aren’t available in Suriname, but there are alternatives available. Popular services like Deezer and Apple Music can be accessed in Suriname. It’s also one of just three countries that has access to the new Caribbean and Latin American music service TrackDrip, alongside Cuba and Curaçao. Many of the local radio stations are also available to listen to online.

Free Surinamese VPN trials

Unfortunately, there aren’t many VPN services that host Surinamese servers; we searched through hundreds and found only two that are worth their salt. Happily, those that we found are two of the best VPN services available, so you can be sure that you’re in safe hands and you’ll be able to take full advantage of everything a Surinamese IP has to offer.
