When it comes to making a photo book, a lot of tools tend to produce similar-looking albums and it can be a challenge to find one that’ll give you an exceptional result. Artifact Uprising is a pleasantly surprising breath of fresh air with its very modern and clean design options and creation interface, giving it an edge on many of the other, less updated platforms. Specializing in wedding books but having options appropriate for other themes and occasions as well, creating a book with this platform is simple, straightforward, and comes with plenty of help along the way. Photo books are just a small category of the other photo-related products offered by this company, such as frames, cards, calendars, and more. Within this category are options to create various kinds of books, such as layflat, hardcover, softcover, board books and beyond. Artifact Uprising delivers all over the world, so users outside of the U.S. don’t have to worry about this limiting factor that they often run into with other companies.
Once you’ve created an account, which is quick and painless, you can choose the type of book you’d like to create and start adding in your photos. Make sure you’re certain about the type of book you want to make because once you start creating a project you can’t switch it to another book type midway through without losing your work. Photos can either be uploaded directly from your computer, or you can pull them in from one of the connected third-party platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, or Google Photos. The editor does allow you to tweak your photos to an extent through cropping, rotating, adjusting the brightness, or adding a black and white filter, but if there is some more detailed editing that you feel needs done, make sure that’s taken care of before uploading.
The editor is pleasant to use – you can really tell that the extra time was taken to add in some special touches to make it user-friendly, such as the charming, realistic preview screen that will help you envision your final project at home on your coffee table. Additionally, Artifact Uprising has an app that can be used to make four different types of photo books (not all can be made this way), but keep in mind that this app is only available for iOS, and can only be used on an iPhone – not on an iPad or another tablet. The iOS app isn’t the best to use – for example, when using it to add photos to a book, it doesn’t give you the option to add from albums or categories in your camera roll. That means if you intend to make a project with photos from a while back, you’ll have to go scrolling and searching for each and every one.
Artifact Uprising’s design is what the platform stands out for, and it definitely values quality over quantity. The super sleek, clean-cut covers offered with custom foil stamping are some of the most modern and classy on the market. However, the overall range of styles and colors is a bit limited and lacks customization options, so if the platform’s style isn’t in line with your vision, you’re out of luck.
As for the design of the pages, you have the option to choose your layout, for which many variations are available, and text, given that the layout you’ve chosen allows for text to be added in. Some further options that are often offered with other photo book companies such as adding in embellishments or borders and changing background colors are unfortunately not possible here, but that probably has to do with wanting to stay consistent with the overall style that Artifact Uprising wants to maintain in its products.
Depending on the type of project you’re creating a photo book for, Artifact Uprising has some pre-made designs specifically for these themes that you can choose from, but the themes are limited to baby and wedding, unlike its competitors that generally extend into pets, vacation, and more. However, with a little bit of creativity, you’ll surely manage to make your non-wedding or baby-themed photo books without the guidance of a pre-made look.
The Artifact Uprising platform has a nice range of book types, including a decent amount of colors, fabrics, sizes, and overall looks. Beyond the standard photo book options are some more unique and creative products that make for great gifts or memorabilia. The layflat photo book, available in five sizes, can have up to 70 pages and is a perfect option for seamless, panoramic photos spreading across two pages. Another stand-out product is the Color Series photo book, coming in three sizes and holding up to 200 pages, with its vibrant shades and circular cut-out on the cover, giving a sneak peek into the content inside. Finally, the Board book that can be up to 40 pages, is a sturdy, and therefore, the perfect gift for a child.
With many of the books, you have the choice between superfine or lustre paper, with the former having an eggshell finish and the latter looking more like a classic print of a photo. If none of the default book options available quite do it for you, Artifact Uprising offers a customized book design service (mostly for wedding albums) that allows you to share your vision with one of its designers who will then include you in the creation and iteration process.
Pricing is not an area where Artifact Uprising shines. While the quality is high and you certainly get what you pay for, this isn’t the choice for those who are on a budget. With the cheapest option at $15, for a small, 5.5 x 5.5 softcover book, prices going all the way up to $300+ for the most luxurious books, and everything in between, it’s safe to say that these prices are well above the average market ones. If you’re hesitant to make this kind of investment but are set on getting top-of-the-line quality, Artifact Uprising’s quality guarantee stating, “If you are not wholeheartedly satisfied with your order each and every time, drop us a note – human to human – so we can make things right” may be reassuring to you. Nowhere on the website is a money-back guarantee mentioned, but you can be assured that you won’t be left out in the cold if you’re not satisfied with your order.
Unfortunately, the support team is only available to be contacted via email Monday through Friday, and it takes about 1-2 business days to receive a reply. Artifact Uprising is present on social media to answer basic, pre-sales questions, but it’s not the place to get technical or product-related support. There is an instant chat feature on the website, but it’s managed by a bot and will basically just direct you to an answer you could have found for yourself within the online documentation. Speaking of the online documentation, it’s actually quite thorough, easy to follow, and full of guiding screenshots. Even though the support team is not open for business as much as we’d like them to be, the tutorials and guides are good enough that you should be able to find the answers to most of your questions.
If you’re looking for quality, sleek design and aren’t under strict budget constraints, Artifact Uprising is definitely a good candidate for your next photo book. Suitable for many types of projects but especially appreciated by the wedding crowd, a book made with this platform will be far from mediocre, and this is backed up by the company’s quality guarantee. With its easy-to-use interface, classy look, and guaranteed quality promise, the product you end up with is bound to be worth every penny spent. It’s free to create an account and play around with the builder, so don’t hesitate to do this and get an idea of your project’s potential.

I’ve used artifact uprising for my engagement, wedding, trip, and annual photobooks for 5 years now because I absolutely love how the books look. They’re simple & elegant. However, I’ve decided to leave my business with AU behind to find another source.
Just to spare all the details & to put it plainly, I’ve run into several issues within the last few years with my books and have received little to no help from customer service. The first two or three years of using AU, I was able to speak to an actual customer support person via phone, but they have since taken that method of contact away altogether. Now anytime I have a problem, email is the only route of communication. This is an example of how AU prioritizes their customers in my opinion. I’ve been a loyal customer for years now, yet in the past few years, have received no compensation for the errors that have happened on their end.
To give insight to anyone weighing their options between Artifact Uprising and other photo websites, do not choose Artifact Uprising. Spare yourself the agony I’ve experienced from lack of customer care after spending hundreds of dollars and spend your money elsewhere. It is not justified to spend the prices they charge for the outcomes you receive.
Hello Emily! We’re really sorry to hear about your experience with Artifact Uprising’s customer support. It’s true that cutting the only direct communication channel will upset many customers, especially if the company doesn’t deploy a fast and reliable email contact center. Have you tried contacting them through social media? The company usually takes one day to answer Facebook messages.
On another note, offering no compensation for their mistakes is unfortunate, and Artifact Uprising should look at how to compensate unhappy customers. It’s a shame – as you said, Artifact Uprising provides top-quality photo books that you won’t find in many of its competitors.
I ordered a $350+ wedding book for my husband for Christmas this year. I noticed that the proofs on the website did not match the order of the proofs in the pdf reference they emailed me. I emailed Shannon (customer support) 6+ times the day after placing the order, letting her know that there is a difference between the order of photos in the pdf proof and their website. After 5 emails, she responded merely “your order is correct. Does that help?” To which I again numerous times responded that it does not match.
Today I was shipped an incorrect $350+ gift book just as I suspected. I emailed multiple times to help clarify this however only 1 meager completely unhelpful response. I wouldn’t waste your money here. They have no respect for their customers. Take your money elsewhere.
