Virtual Wi-Fi Routers and VPNs

Virtual Wi-Fi Routers and VPNs

By Leo S.Leo S. Verified by Sander D.Sander D. Last updated: November 27, 2024 (0)

Virtual Wi-Fi routers are already one of the most appreciated tools, since they allow you to convert your device, whether it is a smartphone, tablet or computer, into a Wi-Fi hotspot. And by connecting it to Wi-Fi or LAN networks, you can share the newly created Wi-Fi hotspot with other devices, including smart TVs, game consoles, and the list could go on. However, everybody knows that using an unknown Wi-Fi network has many dangers, especially if we are not careful enough. Thankfully, all problems related to Wi-Fi sharing can be easily solved if the power of virtual Wi-Fi routers and VPNs are combined.

VPN providers offering virtual Wi-Fi routers

Both SaferVPN and PureVPN offer their own setup features to turn your device into a real Wi-Fi hotspot and start sharing you network with other devices. Although this feature is limited to Windows 7 using these providers, it is possible to use Virtual Router instead: it’s a popular free open source program with which you can easily create a virtual hotspot on Windows 7, Windows 8 or even Windows Server 2012.

Out of the two aforementioned companies, it was PureVPN that became the first provider to offer a native virtual router feature built into its Windows client. By accessing this feature, all you need to do is attribute a name to the new Wi-Fi network, creating a password and selecting the number of connections you want to allow (which is 10 tops).

The other company, SaferVPN doesn’t have this feature built into the client; however, you can still turn your computer into a virtual Wi-Fi and use this VPN provider to cover your back. Yet, you still need to manually create a new Wi-Fi network (using Command Prompt), set the SSID (the network’s name) to SaferVPN and then create whatever password you want. After you’re done, you need to go to your SaferVPN client, choose a server, and connect to your newly created virtual Wi-Fi network with your smart TV, game console or any other device you want to use with VPN.

Alternatives

Despite being a bit pricey for most users, a virtual Wi-Fi VPN router, like a DD-WRT or Tomato router, is not only useful, but one of the best alternatives to standard VPN routers as well. In fact, opting for a VPN router is one of the easiest methods to get access to prime entertainment and a bunch of geo-restricted websites. However, one of the characteristics of these routers is that they are simply not mobile. In other words, you need to carry the whole thing around, unless you have an easy-to-access portable (virtual) network. This means that, depending on your needs and how you intend to use your network, you need to choose between a physical VPN router and a virtual one. However, if you want the advantages of physical and virtual routers alike, you could even opt for both solutions.
