It is obvious that LinkedIn is the No.1 site for professional networking and it inevitably became an important part in the life of any job seeker. It is a perfect companion for your resume(s), a place for your references, recommendations, and a window to the real you. Basically LinkedIn is a billboard advertizing your professional brand; however, just like Facebook, it became a bit overcrowded. So here’s the big question: are there any alternatives and which one is ideal for me?
It’s hard to tell, but Branded.me, About.me, Xing and Sumry.me might be worth checking out.
On this simple and user-friendly website you can create a living resume of yourself, whether you are accessing it from a computer or from a mobile browser. You can simply import your contacts from Gmail, Yahoo or LinkedIn; in fact, you can import all data from the latter, so your Branded.me profile can be fully created in minutes. You have the option to write blog articles and share your thoughts with others so they can get to know you better. However, if you only have ideas about future blog posts, you can write them down and save them for later. Branded.me is free of charge, but in order to send more follow requests a day and get a custom domain, you can choose either the Limited or the Pro pricing plans.
This website, which is not available from Internet Explorer/Edge, but has a mobile application, is another great alternative for LinkedIn. About.me has a unique feature called Spotlight with which you can draw attention to what matters the most to you like photography, teaching, cooking etc., and you can add a link to your emails directing to your profile or share the link on your social media pages. You also have the option to make your profile public so not only About.me members can check out your online “resume”, but other users as well. And just like Branded.me you can go Pro: with the subscription you can customize your domain, personalize your Spotlight button, remove all branding and get priority support.
Despite being primarily developed for German speaking clientele, Xing can be accessed from anywhere, whether you are using a computer or a mobile device. The free services are nothing special, but if you choose the Premium subscription you can track and analyze your visitors, embed videos to your account, search for up to 300 members, including those with commonalities, get notified of your contacts’ updates, and send messages even to non-contacts.
Sumry.me, which can import your LinkedIn data, is two in one: whether you are using the website for free or opt for the Pro version, you can create a professional looking resume and/or build a nice looking timeline where you can enlist and tell all your professional achievements. If you go Pro, you can track your job applications, which you can do directly from Sumry.me, and you can download the resumes you have created with this website too.
