KickassTorents and Torrentz Go Down: Torrenting in Danger?

KickassTorents and Torrentz Go Down: Torrenting in Danger?

In the last couple of weeks, the torrenting community was shaken by the loss of two cornerstones of their service. Both Torrentz and KickassTorrents have vanished with relative quickness. While the latter became the victim of the U.S. government’s action, the cause behind the disappearance of the popular search site is currently unknown. These sad events raised the concerns about the future of torrenting. Could it be possible that Hollywood and the government finally put an end to this popular downloading method? Or will new torrent portals eventually emerge, taking the place of these two defeated giants? Are there any alternatives? We took a look at these glaring issues, and come up with our solution.

Kickass Torrents Seized

End of an era

Even though officials and the press demonized torrenting, calling it piracy, this easy and fast kind method of downloading music, media and video content has become extremely popular. Both sides argue about the actual impact of illegal downloading on sales – pro torrent parties stating that people who download stuff this way wouldn’t actually spend money on it anyway – but torrenting seemed to be a permanent issue, regardless the countless attempts to shut down popular sites. But the tides seem to turn: KickassTorrents, the largest and most popular torrent site, was seized by the government, who claimed seven of its domain sites (including kat.cr, kickass.to and kickasstorrents.com), successfully shutting down the service for good. The internet barely had time to recover from the shock when they realized that Torrentz.eu went down as well. Torrentz had no content on its own, but it worked as a search engine for other, actually operating torrent sites. Torrentz was the largest search provider of its kind, and its loss -which is still unanswered at the moment – struck its member base dearly. Without these two giants gone for now, we can definitely say that the landscape of torrenting changed forever, and for the worst, it seems.

Privacy or piracy?

So, what can the advocates of torrenting do, now that two of their pillars have crumbled? Well, protect their privacy more than ever. It’s true that some other powerhouse torrent sources – like PirateBay – are still up and running, but unfortunately copycats of KickassTorrents have appeared as well. These sites claim to be the true successor of the late site, promising the same service and database. The truth is most of these charlatans are just baiting for unsuspecting or desperate users. Their service is unstable or buggy to say the least, and nowhere near as competent as you would come to expect from the original torrent site. That’s why it’s so important to protect your anonymity more than ever. Try to avoid suspicious torrent sites, and deploy a VPN to protect yourself from malicious data miners and hackers. The argument that a VPN needlessly slows down your connection is exaggerated, and lots of providers offers P2P compatible servers, coupled with protocols types that are cut for streaming and downloading purposes.
