Why did you decide to start a VPN service company?
In early 2010 I was on holidays in China, and at the same time the Australian government was having a heavy discussion about a mandatory internet filter which has not been implemented yet. I researched more into the situation and found many countries are having the same issues with internet filters. Along with not being able to upload our holiday photos to Facebook while in China, this prompted me to start a solution that can be used worldwide.
What’s the advantage of being located in Australia as a VPN provider?
At the time of writing, Australia does not have any data retention laws that require us to log any traffic through our service.
Is your free, ad-supported VPN service just as secure as your premium VPN accounts? And do you track user info to improve the ad experience?
No user tracking is done. The current system does not display ads, however we do plan to move this service forward with more country locations that will be serviced by ads dealt from a third party service that does not track users.
Is SmartDNS just as safe as using a VPN?
Smarter DNS is by no way a “security tool” for the internet. It is however an innovative service in a way it can deliver geo blocked streaming content from providers such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, BBC iPlayer and ABC iView (over 30 streaming sites are supported on the service). The innovation comes down to being able to provide very fast streaming as the “video stream” does not go through any VPN or Proxy; it’s delivered directly to your computer, it’s great for devices such as the Roku or PS3 and Xbox which do not natively support any VPN protocols.
