For many businesses, web conferencing software is now a must-have, but how do you choose between so many great options? We’ll be comparing two of the best in the business: GoToMeeting and Zoom. GoToMeeting is known for its ease-of-use, with meetings started instantly. The service also comes at a fantastic price. In the other corner, Zoom is famous for its high-quality video conferencing, with a large number of possible on-screen participants at one time, and some fun extra features like virtual backgrounds and appearance touch-ups. Both GoToMeeting and Zoom are similarly priced and have similar technical specifications, but there are some key differences.

GoToMeeting

Part of the GoTo series from Boston-based LogMeIn, GoToMeeting has plenty of experience. Since its launch in 2004, GoToMeeting has been an easy-to-use platform, allowing users to get a conference started with just one click. GoToMeeting accommodates meetings of up to 250 participants with 25 active high-definition webcams on screen at one time. Meetings can be recorded for up to two hours, which isn’t long when compared to Zoom’s unlimited recordings. Your recorded meetings are downloadable as MP4 files, with the option of adding transcriptions. GoToMeeting has an admin center that allows for complete control of just about every function, making it a truly flexible platform. The service is available for macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS. And while the mobile apps are simplistic, the browser and desktop versions are impressive.

The GoToMeeting website is filled with tutorials and guides to get you web conferencing. GoToMeeting also provides free training for new customers – a helpful way to learn all the ins and outs. Support can be contacted over the phone, via email, or through social media. Although GoToMeeting doesn’t offer a free version like Zoom, it is cheaper than Zoom’s lowest paid tier – making it great overall value. GoToMeeting offers potential customers a 14-day free trial to test out the full service.

Zoom

One of the world’s most popular web conferencing solutions is Zoom, which has had a meteoric rise since its initial launch in 2011. Zoom is known for its cosmetic features, like the dynamic backgrounds that make it look like you’re on an exotic island or in outer space. There’s also the touch-up feature: a filter that will subtly smooth out the skin tone on your face. Of course, all of these superficial extras mean little if the service itself isn’t up to par. Fortunately, Zoom’s provides very high-quality video calls, allowing users to send and receive video at up to 1080p. With Zoom you’re able to see up to 49 participants on screen at one time – a much higher number than most of Zoom’s rivals. Zoom gives you an unlimited amount of recording time for your meetings, as long as you have enough storage space. On top of that, Zoom has well-designed, easy-to-use apps for macOS, Windows, Androids, and iOS as well as a full browser version.

Zoom

Zoom’s customer support is impressive too, with 24/7 assistance over a variety of channels. The website hosts free daily live training webinars to help you get up to speed with the service. If you’re not ready to commit yet, Zoom offers a free version, though it’s limited in scope compared to the premium versions. And although a subscription to Zoom is more expensive than one for GoToMeeting, it is still reasonably priced given its quality of service.

Conclusion

So, is Zoom able to zoom away from the competition? Not quite, because GoToMeeting shouldn’t be underestimated. GoToMeeting is a cheaper solution compared to Zoom, although Zoom does have a limited free version available. GoToMeeting is quick and easy to use, allowing users to start a meeting with the click of a button. GoToMeeting also merges well with other products in the GoTo range, which is useful if you want to take your conferencing one step further. Meanwhile, Zoom has the more advanced applications, when compared to the competition – especially for mobile users. Zoom provides the highest quality video, with full 1080p high-definition calls. Regardless of which one you choose, you’ll end up with an outstanding piece of web conferencing software.
