VoIP service Grasshopper considers that its mission is to provide a simple yet perfect phone system to help you stay accessible wherever you are. The service offers all the necessary features of any decent virtual phone system, and with its simple and easy-to-use account manager, everything can be easily customized. Additionally, the iOS and Android apps handily separate business calls and messages from personal ones. All these features, plus such rarities as inbound faxing, are available in three affordable plans. And when you learn about the other advantages, such as your personal virtual receptionist, you’ll be asking yourself why you haven’t already signed up. Grasshopper offers a limited free trial as well, allowing you to try the service without taking any chances.

Grasshopper’s features are simple yet get the job done. From your online account, you can manage all calls, messages, faxes, and voicemails. Unfortunately, making outgoing calls is only possible through the desktop and mobile apps, so downloading them is indispensable. Although the desktop app is a bit buggy, sometimes refusing to start, it provides a straightforward dashboard to manage calls and text messages – not faxes, though.

The software also comes with automated SMS and the option to transfer inbound calls to a designated extension. Sending business messages and reading voicemail transcriptions and faxes are also available right off the bat. Some features cost extra but are worth it, such as call blasting, which forwards one call to a maximum of 15 call-forwarding destinations simultaneously. Additionally, Grasshopper works with professional voice actors to record greetings, which you can find in the company’s voice studio. International calls are also possible, but this feature needs to be activated in your account by Grasshopper’s customer care.

Call handling

No matter the plethora of tools, call handling is the one feature where a VoIP system should shine. Fortunately, Grasshopper dazzles with its crystal-clear voice quality for both inbound and outbound calls. It has all the basic features that businesses expect from a VoIP service, including seamless call transferring, instant response, and voicemail transcription. If you receive too many calls to handle on your own, Grasshopper helps you out with Ruby, a personalized live receptionist that answers the phone and queries for you.

Grasshopper can put callers on hold, allowing you to return to them at your own pace. If that’s not enough, calls can be transferred to another extension. These extensions can either be customized by your coworkers or turned into informative resources that clients can call directly. This is quite a useful feature when customers want to find out details about store locations, product descriptions, business operating hours, and the like. Better yet, Grasshopper provides an instant response feature that sends text messages on your behalf when nobody’s available to answer the phone.

Phone system management

Even if the overall appearance of the Grasshopper account is nothing to write home about, it’s extremely easy to use thanks to the logically designed interface. It features five tabs, with the ‘messages and calls’ tab being the most straightforward. It displays call logs – including missed and blocked calls – text messages, voicemails, and faxes. These last two are also stored, with faxes saved as convenient PDFs.

Of the remaining four tabs, ‘extensions’ deserves special attention and can be managed either by the system’s admin or by users that are granted the necessary rights. All phone extensions are fully customizable, meaning you can change the extension’s name, default greeting, associated email address, and more. Assuming it’s properly set up, callers can search for the right extension by typing in the team member’s name.

Phone numbers

Grasshopper supports local, toll-free, and vanity numbers within the U.S. and Canada. There’s also the option to port your current number for no extra fee, but, unfortunately, the virtual phone system doesn’t cover international numbers. It’s worth mentioning that creating an account with a new number is easier than porting your older one. The service automatically generates a local number for you, as the website identifies your location. The same easy setup can be said for toll-free numbers as well. Again, there is the option to either get a fully customized number with a preferred prefix or just choose one of Grasshopper’s recommendations.

Mobile

Since the online account isn’t very mobile friendly, downloading the iOS and Android app is a must to use the service on the go. The apps are perfect for separating business calls from personal ones and, thankfully, are more than just simple softphones. They also include some advanced features, such as displaying voicemails and faxes stored in your online account. Additionally, there are options to get push notifications for received text messages and missed calls, change call-forwarding settings, and call any extensions within the same account.

One confusing and frustrating detail is that certain features are locked to particular mobile operating systems – call returning is only available on Android while fax handling is exclusive to iOS.

Grasshopper provides three plans that come in monthly or yearly subscriptions, where the latter offers 10% off. Thankfully, all subscriptions have the same basic features: unlimited domestic calls, business texting, call forwarding, and the possibility to acquire additional features for an extra cost. The number of included phone numbers and extensions increases with the more you pay, and the Small Business plan also comes with advanced call routing as a bonus. Regardless of the pricing plan, Grasshopper allows you to add extra numbers for a $10 monthly fee.

Starting at $26 per month with an annual subscription, the cheapest plan includes one toll-free or local phone number and three extensions. The Partner plan is almost twice as expensive as Solo but provides three numbers and six extensions. But the best deal for small teams is the most expensive plan. While the $80 per month (which is billed annually) might seem excessive, it gives you access to five phone numbers and unlimited extensions. If you’re still hesitating, you can take advantage of a 7-day free trial. Although it comes with limitations, Grasshopper offers 50% off its full plan during this trial.

Customer support

The company provides 24/7 customer support, which includes the option to call the staff on a toll-free phone number. Inquiries can also be sent via email, fax, or social media. Unfortunately, we never received an answer to our query on Facebook, but Grasshopper’s detailed knowledge base makes up for this slight negligence. The website’s chatbot, Sparky, can be found in the bottom-right corner and guides users to the relevant answers.

Additionally, the company has a blog where it discusses business-related topics, and a resource hub for entrepreneurs full of useful tips. Finally, the company’s most advanced and unique support feature is the Grasshopper Academy, where free, animated, and expert-led webinars teach how to start, run, and advertise your business.

Bottom line

Grasshopper provides excellent phone management tools that lets small- and medium-sized businesses handle calls professionally regardless of their location. With its simple and user-friendly online account manager, Grasshopper guarantees that your company can handle all call-related traffic without any fuss. Additionally, entrepreneurs and business owners will surely appreciate the useful extras such as business texting and the numerous add-ons. And let’s not forget that both the mobile and desktop apps are perfectly suited for handling calls and messages. Add all this to the reasonably priced plans, with their unlimited minutes, and it’s safe to say that Grasshopper is a VoIP service provider that should be seriously considered by anyone looking for a virtual phone system. The best part is that you can see everything for yourself by taking advantage of the 7-day free trial.

However, when it comes to everything else Cloud Phone is a jackpot, particularly for new businesses. All essential features are available regardless of the chosen subscription plan, the service includes a simple, straightforward, mobile browser-compatible account manager, while extras like the completely free mobile-only features provide everything you might need completely for free. And all of this comes with the option to pick and choose how many free domestic calls and business SMSs will fit into your business needs in one of four pricing plans, all of which offer outstanding value for money and a generous 30-day free trial.

Hi Kai, and thank you for your comment! We’re sorry to hear about your experience with Grasshopper. Have you been able to reach out to customer support? While RingCentral is a great virtual phone system, call forwarding is usually one of the basic features of most business VoIP offers. So, it’s strange that Grasshopper isn’t working as it should. Have a great day!

  2. Do not use this company – the company does not disclose all fees, auto renews with no email or reminder, will not refund money for yearly subscription after 30 days. Deceptive and does not show renewal date in your account anywhere. After calls and holding for a total of more than an hour, they still would not refund and said they would look into the fact their was no notice sent, that there is no renewal date posted in your account, and when asked for the terms of services that said it was given when I signed up over a year a go. Would not send me a new copy with my agreement to them.

  3. This has been a good choice for our real estate business of 5 agents continuously on the road (one person always in backoffice). Even though we use a lot of Whatsapp in the team, it’s good to have this as our main line of contact. All five stars from me, nothing to note on how this performs or how Grasshopper handles its stuff.

  4. I can not say enough about how well Grasshopper works. Our 800 number was ported over from AT&T smoothly with no interruption in service. Support is great, especially my need to block a couple of nuisance numbers which AT&T could not do (my impetus for the move.) Best of all I’m paying about 20% of what I was paying AT&T every month. The app that displays your 800 number rather than your cell number when you call clients let us use just one phone for personal & business — another saving.

  5. We’re putting our vanity number more out there now on our site, FB page, local advertising and are getting way more good leads in through calls now. If it hadn’t been for the easy forwarding etc in Grasshopper we wouldn’t be using phone leads this much.

  6. Benjamin Goldman

Services like Gotomeeting and Sharefile have never disappointed me. It was a coincidence for me to see Grasshopper is part of it as well, so I went with this one after Hover Networks blew it for me. My numbers were transitioned over rather smoothly, and I’m rather a big of fan of how the interface works. Basically the main thing with Grasshopper is that it makes the whole process as easy as possible, which is essential since I think VoIP and moving numbers over is quite the pain in the ass. I was first doubting about moving to Grasshopper because of the whole hassle with the numbers and making sure everything connects through well, but I’m happy I decided to do the move.

    1. I am new to grasshopper and am not having the best experience! Sure, the setup was easy and convenient. However, the system default does not read correctly! Does not mention the name of the company or give the directory option. And have not been able to contact customer service in over a week. Not by phone or email… Next time, I’d advise anyone to call first before joining a company. Make sure you can speak to a person!

  7. These people are a joke. First they give me a number from some other business. So i get charged for boat load of wrong numbers. Then say I never canceled my account so that they could get one more month in. Now refusing to refund. Not one of the calls was for my business. Worthless. Only thing I can say is most of these reviews have got to be fakes!!!!

  9. This is the worst company ever. I will say, that it was very easy to speak with a human being. But I attempted to place an order several times, and could “not pass verification”. Apparently there is an automated verification process that the company has no control over and no information about. Twice, they suggested “using different information”. I have a name, address, phone number, and credit card number. That is the information I’ve used. There IS no other information! They have no clue what the “verification” is checking for, and have no ability to actually complete my order. Dealing with their process has been the biggest waste of time and most frustrating experience imaginable. Bottom line is their system is terrible and they’re completely clueless about how it works, and the only thing they can tell you is “Sorry”. Sorry indeed.

  10. Thank you so much to Grasshopper’s support team for helping me port my old number. All troubles I’ve been experiencing are forgotten after I’ve been helped so well by their team. Everything runs smoothly now and I’m loving using Grasshopper already so far.

Great service, wish I had made the switch to a “phoneline over the Internet” a whole lot sooner. When I had my phone configured, I couldn’t stop ringing my own number because I think the phone menus are just so much fun. I’ve already had a bunch of people complimenting me over my new phone system =)

  12. After fighting with my VIOP provider over call quality issues I decided that it was time to ditch them and move to Grasshopper. I am immediately impressed. As customer service rep actually called me to make sure that everything was set up to my liking. She took the time to answer all of my silly questions to make certain that I was happy.

I am a one person operation who needs an easy to manage and reliable phone service. Grasshopper is perfect for me.

  13. Well, that was fun… Contacted the help line today about a cancelled account. Nothing but going in circles with one person and when she said that she was going to look up more information about our account, only had someone else with a less-than-pleasant disposition take over the call so that we could go around in more circles about the definition of words like “active,” “open” and what it means to be “on hold.” Not a fan of this company now, to say the least… So glad we cancelled our account.

  14. I went for the VOIP provider that made things simple, and found that Grasshopper’s system is just as clean and simple to use as their own website. I ended up enabling more of the available features than I had initially planned on putting into use, simply because it’s such a breeze to set everything up and get it all customized. It’s incredible what you get for just $49 a month, and the way it has changed how I handle my incoming calls.
You’d spend hundreds of dollars on fancy advertising campaigns, corporate branding and more to get a professional look and feel for your business, while really this phone system is a way on its own to make sure you look and sound better.

The service works really well for our team of 10, we’ve been using Grasshopper for the past two months now. I thoroughly went through a few options that seemed most suitable for a team of our size, and found this company to be the one with the best set of must-have features and value for money.

  17. Having worked at a company that used Grasshopper for all phone needs, it was a no brainer for me to opt for them the moment I started my own business. Voicemail via email is my all time favorite feature, as I’m often not able to attend incoming calls when I’m with a client and can then take a brief look to see if an incoming call is of high importance or not. Best of all is that I can do it all from my iPhone now whereas a few years ago you needed these big ugly desktop phones to be able to do half of what’s possible today.

  18. Grasshopper knows what the startup scene is like – they give us the flexibility and level of professionalism that we need. We started with their entry-price plan and have already upgraded in the meantime. I didn’t even bother comparing our new plan to that of competitors as the support has been great along the way as well.
